Afternoon all. My pony has an unfortunate case of half-mane-itis... anyone have any good remedies which might encourage regrowth, or is it just a case of getting her some sort of pony wig containing false plaits?! Equally, are there any miracle half-mane-itis avoidance techniques you can recommend?!

Cheers!!

My horse used to get the middle of his mane rubbed out every winter when he worse rugs with necks, the options are to not put rugs with necks on them or have a fairly thin base rug with a neck and cut it right up the seam so there is a gap which the mane can sit in and hopefully won't get rubbed, it has worked so far :)

One or two I could handle... it's a proper half-mane though.... :o

Thanks Milz, truth be told I'm less concerned about next winter, more on immediate solutions to inspire regrowth - something like the spray on hair advertised on the back of the Daily Mail, but longer!!!!

my horse has it too so intersted in thoughts how to prevent it
mind you - mine was a specific rug - 3 days and it was gone!!
so at least i know the cause!

Hmm, unfortunately I don't know any immediate cures but when he got it all rubbed out last winter all I could do is wait..... and it did grow back quite quickly and usually he only had 2 plaits worth rub out, so I plaited the 2 either side of the rubbed out bit as close to each other as I could.... if you get my drift, so the gap looked smaller, but at the end of the day I never had any comments... its just one of those things, you can buy false plaits, I have seen adverts from the pretty ponies type companies... :)

Don't use neck rugs, that is the only way to stop it happening. I hogged my horse last year to regrow his mane, and it grew beautifully but then the snow came and so he had to go in a neck rug and now I have a 2 plait missing area too :D

I am using this -Leovet No Rub as apparently it is good at getting the hair to grow back and stop any midges biting the uncovered bits and making the horses itch. Of course you could use cornucrescine if you horse isn't grey...!

I'm in exactly the same boat!!! B has literally half his mane - did take me much less (half funnily enough!) time to plait last weekend though!!! He had 9 very neat plaits (i do loads) then a load of rubbed out fluff and bald bits and one lonely plait just above his withers.

Ridiculous!!!

Nope, not grey, I did think of cornucrescine and glad I'm not going completely mad!! Marvellous, I'm off e-shopping. One or two plaits are fine, but this is a proper half mane and I don't have the patience for falsies, or want to hog! Thanks.

I had this problem last year after my horse had neck rugs on I tried everything to speed up the regrowth ..... megatek but nothing worked fast enough so I "borrowed" some tail hair form my friends horse and made plaits and sewed them into her remaining mane judges never noticed although it was fiddly. Her mane took all sumer to grow back so this year she hasnt worn neck rugs and she has a full mane.

none of my half neck or full neck rugs rubbed gave my mare half-mane-itis...

it was just her dress circle no neck sherpa rug = took half her mane out (bottom half - one plait at withers then nothing for 10 inches then full ISH fluffy mane!) in 3 days flat - i'm embarrassed to say i didn't really notice when i was checking rugs etc and was in the -16 so wasn't hanging about with them off... it kept her snug as a bug though! lol

Ive got the same problem it's over 4 plaits wide the mane missing on my boy right in the middle of his neck. I had to make plaits from tail hair & sow them into his mane for regionals. Took me over 3hrs to get it looking right.
It was the hood on his Rambo duo that did it in the cold spell really annoying.

I really don't know of any miracle cures.

Wheezy where did you get it from and does it seem to be working?

Baby seems to be a bit of an itchy pony and likes rubbing his neck off anything - not great when he's supposed to be shown au naturel!

I'm trying megatex at the moment, but not really been long enough to have an opinion.

secret is to use rugs with DETACHABLE NECKS - the ones that velcro on with straps to the main rug never rub my horses manes...BUT if i have rugs with attached necks, all there mane gets rubbed off!!!

so i think it is only the attached neck rugs that rub, in my experience.

sorry - dont know any miracle cures....but it will grow back pretty quick - and most horses owners either have the same problem or understand that others do, so i wouldnt worry! xx

MEGATEK it has worked wonders in two weeks on my boy. It is not cheap but if you put it on neat a couple or three times a week its great. I use it all over his coat in a spray dispensor watered down after he has worked and all he smells off is pina colada!!!!!!!!!!

We have a lead rein pony with a similar problem. She rubbed out half her mane in December, I would say it's about 50% back to full strength because of this:

Washed mane in Hibiscrub.
Used EQyss Mega-Tek Rebuilder every day.
Put on a Supreme Products padded bib with mane saver.
Put on a Supreme Products body wrap.

I have been obsessive about this and it's paid great dividends. Our first show of the season was on 28th Feb and I actually had something to plait!

It's not perfect yet though and so I invested in some false plaits from
www.extra-forelock.com and they are just fabulous and really easy to use.

Best of luck!

the only cure ive ever found is not to use a neck cover! Lots of other horses will have half mane itis at this time of year too. If you plait your horse its not so noticeable

Not solution for now but for next year try human spray on leave in hair conditioner on the mane. Makes it more slippery and stronger to stop getting rubbed. And make sure the inside of the neck bit of the rug doesn't get greasy as it then gets rough and rubs more. Bit of fairy liquid and wash it off a few times during the winter. I found all in one rugs no worse than seperate hoods - but they need to be rug style that fits your horses shape and I think makes more difference once you've got neck too - not all 6'3 horses have same size and length necks and what fits one will rub another

Another vote for Mega Tek I am using it at the moment and it does work. Its about £20 a bottle but quite a big bottle and it smells of coconut oil. It has started to bring my mare's mane back.

I got it from my local tack shop. Cannot say whether it is working, but it comes with a high recommendation so I will give it a go! Ted got horribly itchy last year and rubbed half of his mane out and his tail, so this year I am going in prepared!

Oh and I will wash his mane and tail at least once a week from now until end of summer to try and keep on top of itchiness!

I've found I can't win with my horse tbh, attached neck rubs the mane, detachable neck rubs the withers raw and no neck she just rubs it herself along with her neck. I have conceded that she is going to have a half mane forever now and only get 9 or 10 plaits in compared to the 27 I did when she, briefly, had a full mane!

I'll see if I can find a bottle online. Thank you!

We have now got a full mane again, ive used Megatek and ive only used half neck rugs this year and it has worked

I wish I knew the miracle cure for this too! Oskar kept all his mane intact under his Bucas power full neck rug - until three weeks ago. Now, he has exactly half a mane. He is missing around four plaits worth. :(. I really don't want to hog him because he has a Shetland pony mane anyway and I think it would grow back worse. Although I remember when Tempi hogged Archie and to be honest it looks great!!!! :D I'm too attached to my white banded plaits to do it though....
