OK I'll start by saying I'm not a fan of any 'saddle manipulation' using pads etc. I like my saddles to fit like a glove. But I've had the saddler out today and my saddle doesn't fit (I knew this which is why I had him out)... it's not awful but it's not right. Unfortunately, because of the shape of the back of the saddle it is never going to fit even with saddler tweaking so next week he's coming out with some saddles to try ... He has however said with her short back and slightly rounder barrel that narrows quickly, he seems to think that to get the close contact saddle with a perfect fit, SHe is going to need a made to measure or heavily tweaked standard fit depending on the make I choose. He reckons that I'm looking at christmas for a new saddle...

So in the mean time I have to make do... can anyone recommend a pad with variable shims that I can use as a stop gap.. (Id rather pay more for one that works than get a 'bargain'...)

Thanks

LeMieux pro sorb are excellent, I have one under my flexEE saddle and am very impressed with it :)

I just got one of these too & am really pleased with it. My saddler said for me it was important for there to be no sheepskin along the spine, so it didn't pad out the gap between horse and saddle.

I also have a prolite front riser pad that I like, but I wanted sheepskin on this horse as it has softer edges than the prolite iykwim!

i have an acavello riser under my saddle and i really like it, i have the front riser version but they do a back riser too.

I have to use on as my previous saddle fitter did a really bad job and over flocked my saddle and ended up causing muscle atrophy behind his withers. I now have a new excellent fitter who removed the flocking and advised me to use a soft riser that will allow the muscle to build up again. It's been about 4 months and the difference is definitely noticable.

Quite expensive but in winter I use a Le mieux sheepskin half pad with removable inserts to make it either front or rear riser.
Absolutely love it and it does a great job as my horse has muscle wastage since retiring.
