I am trying to find some suitable reins to use on my Highland Pony and naturally the typical rubber reins with the bobbles get matted in my pony's mane and I don't want it getting damaged as I need to show him in his natural state.
I've been looking at some of the smooth rubber reins or half rubber reins but wonder if these still have the same effect as the friction against the rubber will still cause the same issues.
Can anyone advise on their experience??
Naturally i want some grip aid too especially as he is only 4 but wondering if anyone otherwise has any other solutions/advice or if I'm going to have to 'make do' with a least damaging option on reins.
Thank you! :)

I like plaited reins like these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/bhp/plaited-reins, good grip but look smart and I didn't have a problem with they getting matted in the mane.

I have used the half rubber ones on a Dartmoor and didn't notice the mane getting caught in them but he did always have copious amounts of conditioner in is mane at all time to stop the mud sticking and to strengthen the hair.

Thanks catroo - I use M&T conditioner on Donald's mane and being a highland it is thick. I just want to minimise the damage so he doesn't inadvertently end up with 'chunks' missing out of his mane as it is so beautiful!

I will have a look and try some of these out :)

You should try reins made using Biothane Supergrip (ours are called 'Sekure') They have a very smooth surface compared to the 'tackiness' of standard rubber grips or insider grip reins as it's a completely different material BUT still gives great grip!
