Don't suppose there's anyone on here that knows the signs of demodex?

Halo had it very bad (to the point of almost being PTS a few times) before I got her (think I posted her story when I introduced us both) and I'm a bit concerned that it's came back. I'll be taking her to the vet tomorrow but I was hoping someone here might put my mind at rest...

Other than the obvious redness/hair loss, the skin feels a bit 'thick' and she's been scratching but I wouldn't say much more than normal. She seems quite well and content within herself too.

Thank you lovely dog people and sorry I've not posted more, until now she's been doing grand; recall is brilliant, sit/stays are pretty good, she's getting the hang of retrieving without chewing (too much!) and maybe, just maybe will go out for a couple of days next season.

And since I know you all love a good picture or two;

Knackered just after her big run in the field playing with the realllly big black dog(or the horse if you're not an eejit spaniel)

Kiss for her Auntie Jayne (I've tried to explain that Halo is a dog and not a sprog, but neither listen)

Next time, embed the pics (like I've done) by copy/pasting the img code.

Noidea about the demodex: hope she's ok.

Sorry, was posting from my phone and you don't get the img code in the app. Didn't mean to cause any offence/make a forum faux pas by posting links.

You didn't! I just thought it would be easier for the pics to be embedded. Equally sorry, didn't want to imply you were doing something bad!!

What does the vet say about the demodex?

Ahhh, got you, thanks for helping tis much appreciated :) (I was confused when the app didn't have the img code - maybe I should actually boot up my laptop one day and stop using my phone?)

Don't know about the Demodex yet, her appointment is at 3.30 so we'll find out then - it has got bigger again from last night though. I'll post an update when I get her back from the vet.

Domodex mange is easy to treat. My poor boy Jack another Springer, has had it twice (Due to his immune system being down)

This is a picture of his leg when it was very bad the first time

Another spangle, how lovely! Were you able to resolve the immune system issue? Can it be boosted somehow?

cinnamontoast

On both occations yes.

The first was when he had a low thyroid, which was sorted with tablets.

The second one was when he was diagnosed with Bronchitis and was on steroids.

I now know the signs so will treat before it ever get bad.

It used to be a death knell for demodex diagnosis in the sixties and seventies. We should so grateful for these new spot-ons that zap it so well.We use Promeris, still very available hereabouts before you know who pipes up:D

Sorry I'm just getting back now, didn't have a chance yesterday.

The Demodex is back, given she's already on a rotation of promeris and advocat there's not much more in those respects they can give her. We are going to try the aludex

Stupid phone!... We're going to try the aludex (or however you spell it) baths again because it has got worse since the photos I posted.

She also appears to have a compromised immune system so we'll be doing some tests for that(like I'm not poor enough already...) and because she looks like she's having another, different, allergic reaction on her belly we've got a couple of antibiotics and a steroid to take for a month.

I've said since I've had her I'm not going to put her through protracted, uncomfortable treatment for something that is not really curable/recurrent. So we'll have to wait and see what these tests throw up to work out what our next steps are.

Anyway, she's pretty happy at the minute playing in the run with the rest of the dogs and catching the white stuff falling from the sky...eejit spaniel!

Thanks for all the help :)

The steroids aren't for the demodex, they're for the other reaction she's been having. (Not one for being easy to treat is our Halo :) )

I'm not giving up yet and won't do so lightly but if you take a look at the link below, it's Halo around the time she was rescued. She got quite a bit worse than that before she got better and I simply will not put a dog through that level of treatment again. From her vet notes I know of four separate occasions during her treatment they very nearly put her to sleep because of the Demodex and also her reactions to the treatments. :(

As I say I will do all I can for her because she's mine, I love her and she's a fighter but to me there is a time to say enough is enough. Thankfully we're no where near that at the moment, she's sitting snoring on my lap and long may it continue :)

Glad your boy is doing so well though, he's beautiful. Can I ask did he develop his Demodex as a pup or as an adult? Half the stuff I read says adult onset is incureable...sometimes the Internet is not the best!

Demodex lives on all animals skin but will get worse if the immune system is low.

The first time he had it was when he developed an inactive thyroid (the first picture ,the one of his leg) and the second time was when he was on the steroids.(the face). He was an adult aged 9 yrs old.

We used the wash, in all 4 bottles the first time and 2 bottles the second time.

Slowly his coat is growing.

My poor lad has Ben through a lot in the last 4 yrs , he has arthritis in one elbow and both hocks also he has an under active thyroid (now under control) and last August he was diagnosed with Chronic Bronchitis, of which he spent 3 days in th RVC at Potters Bar. I must have spent Thousands (just as well he is insured).
