I have a much loved saab 92 I was planning to tow with.I'm saving for a light weight single trailer or a bateson derbym unfortunatly I have discovered the hard way that it diesn do snow or ice! I'm now considering buying a 4x4 or a volvo. If I get one big enough to tow an ifor williams I can then hire a trailer and use saab plus savings to get a more practical car. I'm in the pennines so snow and ice are bad up here.

well i have had two daihatsu fourtracks and currently have a vauxhall monterey{rebadged isuzu trooper} both proper 4 x 4s.depends how old, price etc you want to spend.mine happily pulls an ifor williams and tows 3 tons.

. Have towed horse boxes out of mud, gone round all the snow and ice bound roads, up and down tracks, and survived

Alright, so not the most comfortable for very long journeys, and a bit noisy so makes using the handsfree difficult (must look into that!), but overall a very good car. Brilliant for towing trailers

I got the last of the old style as I don't like the new shape

Mu Isuzu trooper has been excellent on the snow and ice, not moved a muscle other than where I wanted her to go. Pulls a trailer with ease (Ifor 510) with 2 big horses in. Had mine 5 yrs now and wouldnt swap her for the world!

I have heard of a car being described as a "hairdresser's car" before, but never a "salon car". Does it have a chair, sink, mirror and dryer fitted?

We have an Izuzu Trooper which we use for towing a trailer BUT when it broke down a couple of weeks ago and had to go in for warranty work we bought an old ford maverick dead cheap just for a few weeks. I love it, I had to tow the Izuzu into the garage with it, have used it to push and tow round bales around the field in the snow. I would say it is better than the Izuzu, whixh is much heavier but I suppose it depends on whether you want an older car or not. It is I suppose quite agricultural and much slower than the Trooper

I used to have a Disco and it was brill for everything......except getting to work every day, it was very thirsty and too big for the office car park.........lots of comments about Chelsea tractors taking over the spaces.....

cars and towing trailers......its a No No!!!

buy yourself a cheap 4X4, u will never regret it I only paid £2K for mine passed MOT last 2 years with only minimal work required.

i would doubt any insurer would cover you on a claim on a 3rd party liability basis towing with a car.

My concern is actually about traction in snow and ice. I think that I would struggle to fuel most big 4x4's as I do 40 miles to work and back and sometimes do 100 to 200 mile trips for work. I think a lot of the smaller 4x4s are actually lighter than sime big saloon cars so not as good for towing. I don't actually agree that cars are a no no for towing having used mondeos for ten years plus towing all over the uk with no problems. All perfectly legal with a big saloon, light weight box and a 14 hh pony that only travels alone! It did take me 15 mins to get 25 yards to my house today as blooming saab really doesn't do ice, slush or snow!
