Halting square

A forward transition is a must, so not letting them "die" into the halt. Also learning to feel when they are square and awarding them, they soon learn!

practice, and making sure you have an even contact, and a good quality trot...could never do square halts but horse is now very tidy! think its all to do with him going better!dont rush the halt, let him go through into it, if you know what i mean...mine used to always just stop dead and put his head in his chest...it felt so messy!!

One of ours seems to have got the hang of this recently, she seems to be able to take more weight behind so I think that that must help and the transition seems much more balanced and direct. Hoping that the little mare will manage it too eventually, but does anyone find that if they practice too much the halt gets worse.

Snoop and Winston both stuggle to stand square, but ive ben working on it, and managed to get a good square halt at the end of my test on sunday.

I try for a good meaningful trot, horse working nicely forward and relaxed, half halt with my knees but keeping my leg on so the horse is still going forward. Keep the rein elastic so theres no tention in the mouth and neck.

I practise a lot with trotting to nearly walk transistions and trotting on again this helps to start with, then take it one step further.

Always ride forward into the halt tho, as this is def the key to a square halt.

Once i get a good halt say maybe the back leg is a little out i will lean down and tap the hind leg up with my stick just so he gets the idea. This has helped and now he understands when i give a little nudge nudge with my leg he will bring a hindleg up etc.

Its just practise, i make a point of trying to stand him up square every time i halt and even when i finish off, plus out hacking.

Try to think of growing tall from the waist up and long from the waist down, give the aids but as you feel the horse about to halt allow slightly so he can finish the halt square without leaning on your hands.
My daughter scored a perfect 10 at a BD comp for her final halt. Yes we had never seen one before and probably never will again, but it was nice.

We never fiddle or alter how they halt but think of the work before and during the movement but we don't move them if they are not square
