do they work?
want to get a halti or similair headcollar for the delinquent pup as would be nice to have more control over where his head goes....

but would it work with an extendable lead, we have them cause the terriers cant be trusted to recall if they get on the sent of something and lots of sheep around.

I would say not... imagine your dogs goes charging off after something and then the extendable lead comes to its end.. it is going to wrench the poor pup/dogs head and neck back in the direction it has come from.. IMO VERY unsafe as the halti is to be lead from the head not neck!!!

How about a canny halti, this may work but still you would be pulling against the dogs nose.. which IMO is not what you want to do at speed!

We use a Halti/extendable lead combination with the untrainable dog. She is fine with it.

[/ QUOTE ]Does she not wrench he head neck with it at all? Or is she used to it now?

No, not at all. It is no different from handling a horse in a headcollar - much easier than with something round the neck!

[/ QUOTE ]Hmmmm.. not sure I agree with that, but in principle it sounds right.

Horses are a lot bigger so controlling from neck would require you to be above... like you are with a dog.

Thanks for answering though.

I personally hate extendable leads and would keep well away from them. Our dog had one hell of an accident with one, however having said that ours is a giant breed. He was under the maximum weight limit by 20 kg but the lead still broke. I told my husband this would happen and it did ! All vet fees were met by the manufacturer as we threatened legal action.

k, thanks guys. i really hate walking him and always use a short lead to have some form of control as the extendable is so bulky, but everyone else jsut uses the extendable.

I'd recommend a Gentle Leader over a Halti. IMO they fit better, are less likely to ride up towards the dogs eyes and they seem to be better accepted by dogs compared with a halti

My daughter and I use a Dogmatic with an extendable lead for her (rescued) Weimaraner bitch as she has a fancy for chasing cyclists, joggers and horses!! She does have offlead but only when we are able to see for a great distance and there is no one about. We manage quite well and it has never caused any problems, however I would imagine it would be different with a very excitable or unruly dog. Jessie is fairly well behaved and does walk nicely - without the Dogmatic she drags like a steam train though.

I sometimes use a halti with an extendable lead on my wirehaired dachshund. She pulls like mad in a harness or a collar but trots along very meekly in her halti. However once off the lead she spends half her time trying to rub it off... often at high speed rubbing head along the floor... I swear other dog walkers think she's having some sort of fit

Never had much luck with the things at all to be honest - have a JRT that pulls like mad and can get a halti off with in seconds. Then if you tighten it so he cannot pull it off he just scratches at his face till he pulls it off, gets his feet stuck or makes his gums bleed and i take it off. I have resorted to just accepting that nothing is going to stop his pulling

Can't you remove it when you take the lead off? It seems a bit unkind to make her wear it when it's not needed if it's causing her so much discomfort. My dog has a 'gentle leader' (like a halti but less uncomfortable) but also a proper collar with his tags on so I can take the other one off completely when he's having a free run

Agreed 1/2 choke max full choke and the owner should be branded a bit like using a heavy bit on a horse because you can't be arsed to train it properly. There are some "flexible leads on the market that take out the initial shock of a a pulling dog these may help?

yes haltis do work . our jack russell pulled like mad when we took him for walks but now hes fine . only problem is when another dog comes toward him we have to unclip the headcoller bit off because otherwise he can be aggressive .xx sorry to blab on abit xx
