Well, it was not the most successful competition!

We got to Myerscough (this time without any crunches) and Hannah had travelled really well and not sweated up at all. I tacked her up and she seemed to warm up really nicely for the Novice class (N38). It was quite busy in the warm up, so she got her knickers in a twist but I really worked her and she seemed to settle... until we had to walk past the horse walker to get into the arena!!!

After this she was on her toes, spooking at everything and quite inattentive to me... we ended up on 57.9% I think

We put her back in the box and I decided to see whether I could do the Elementary HC... there had been a withdrawl so I tacked her back up and she warmed up fantastically!!! Her collected work was outstanding, and her medium was much improved from the first test. However, as soon as we went up the centre line and halted in E53 she stuck her tongue over the bit and that is how we did all of the test! She ended up with a very poor 50.8% I was so annoyed at her because she really let herself down

Anyway, it is the first outing and I am determined to conquer her habit of sticking her tongue over the bit!!!

Never mind, you have done well to even get her to a comp. so soon after weaning, I wouldn't be concerned about the marks

This is not a crit., but does she often get her tongue over the bit? Its just in the photos the flash has been pulled too far down to become effective. A drop would be something else to try if she does it regularly

If you are looking at the first picture at the flash I always have to have it loose to start because I struggle fastening the cavesson tight when I first tack up. I tightened the cavesson just after the first picture

She constantly puts her tongue over the bit... it is something she has always done

But doesn't do it in her double for some reason.

What a shame - you both look very smart.
I'm not a fan of overly tight nosebands for no reason, but it does look as though your cavesson could be slightly higher and tighter which might help keep her jaw still - in the first photo it looks as though the flash is pulling the cavesson down....

I'm sure you will crack it soon and do much better next time. Don't be too critical of her/you - first BD outing after being off work to have a baby

I always have to have the cavesson slacker at the beginning and then tighten it as my fingers are really weak so I can only tighten it properly when I have ridden for a while... It was up a hole each side as soon as the top picture had been taken

The flash just does not seem to keep her mouth closed at all...
 
Ah ok. I'd try her in a drop noseband as my next step then. OR what is she like in just a loose fitted cavesson? Some horses relax and are completely still in their mouths when they have nothing to fight. Worth a try?
 
I was thinking of trying her in just the cavesson with the bit up a whole... I will also try a drop in the week with this bit or a NS

She is such a complicated mare... You always have to be five steps ahead of her in order to ride her. Someone once said to me that she looks easy to ride but when they got on her they soon realised she just tries anything and everything to get her own way

She is a real stroppy mare... and one that you really have to find a 'click' with before she will work with you. I have found a few of these 'switches', but she is very very intelligent, too much so really

I think she looks in great shape, Becki. Nice pics, well done. I found that a drop noseband made a big difference to one of my old horses too, shame about the tongue thing, better luck next time.
 
Thanks Gaynor... she is having today off because apart from the actual tests, she did work really hard and very nicely

But the drop is definitely a option... just going to have a play about with things this week.

We have another competition at Adlington on Saturday where she is booked in for the two Novice classes

Oh what a shame! Oh well, there's always next time.

Have you tried her in a drop? I think they are much better for horses that tend to put their tongues over the bit than flashes, especially if you have trouble doing the flash up.
 
That is todays job... but the drop of the KK was not a successful combination, so today is the drop and the NS Verbibend which is thinner.

My boy goes extremely well in a drop and the Verbinded. The KK was too thick for him too, and he hated it, and he fights the flash strap. Is so much more comfortable in a drop.
