Question in the title. Would you buy a handmade show rug in your colours, personalised or not. Would you pay extra for the fact it is handmade for your horse?

I can use a sewing machine and fancied making a rug for my boy. I just wondered whether there would be a market for them?

Thanks in advance for any replies!

If the quality and price was right I am sure that people would buy :)

What sort of material would you be using and what designs do you have in mind?

If the price was decent, yes. I prefer to buy made in Britain if I can, and I'm prepared to pay a bit extra for it, but I'm only a PhD student, my money isn't endless!

And as long as it was made with an industrial strength sewing machine. My mum tried to sew a surcingle back on one of my turnout rugs once with her normal sewing machine, it pretty much dropped straight off. We gave it to my neighbour, who has a heavy duty machine, job done! (Did buy a "personalised" colour rug once, got it for my birthday. Very disappointed- the binding fell off in no time at all.)

I was thinking of starting with a cotton mix lined with something a bit fancier, maybe velvet or satin to keep coats flat. Plain colours with a contrasting trim.

Hnmisty that is the problem. I don't have an industrial machine. I think mine would be fine to make the rug but I know it wouldn't be up to sewing surcingles so I would have to find somebody to do that part.

If you are targetting the show market then a decent cotton on fleece outer with a satin lining would probably go down very well

Most show rugs dont have surcingles anyway -you could have nothing or maybe the sort of fastening used by Thermatex which is a single strap under the tummy

And yes I would buy that sort of thing if the price and the sizes were right

Yes - I did :D

Mainly because I wanted black with hot pink trim and I couldn't buy a matching set here - I wanted one in cotton and one in wool.

With her name on them. :p

Well, if they were made on your machine, and survived a reasonable period trial on your horse, then I would theoretically be interested :)
