Hi all you bit wizards any ideas or bits to prevent this he is not putting his tongue over the bit just handing out the side of his mouth has only just started. Also a the bit needs to be suitable for dressage. He is wearing a snaffle with a flash at the moment.

thanks boss will try- have not changed his bit but have just put the flash on him because he was crossing his jaw. He seems to have quite a small mouth for his size

You may need to experiment with nosebands- I'd try a grackle and a drop, some just take exception to flashes- cant use one on Boss but he's v happy in a drop

Ask your dentist to have a look as we found that Mo's tongue is too fat & her sticking her tongue out was to get more comfortable, which is why she never does it with the pelham used when she is jumped. For Dressage she is in a sprenger WH ultra or the Full Cheek

arh, i have the same problem. I think my boy has a dislike for jointed bits as he is fine in the rubber kimblewick but not the french link snaffle. Am trying a straight bar happymouth soon. i tries with the flash and crank noseband but it made no difference

Delia did this with a thick bit or a double - she had a very small mouth with a thick tongue and it was too much.

Changed to a thin mouthpiece and used a rugby pelham for showing and the problem was solved.

If he is doing this due to lack of room, strapping is mouth shut would not be fair.

Would also have mouth checked out by dentist

hi my mare did this - Sec D with very thick tongue - now use a Neuschule training snaffle with comfort port for everything except dressage (not yet dressage legal but I'm hoping !!) & mullen mouth snaffle for competing at dressage. Seems to have worked well - only flaps her tongue when polos are about !!
