How on earth do you get the hole in the middle? I try and cut one out with a knife but so far have had no luck and just end up chucking it on the floor for him. I would like to hang one on some rope for Baron to play with as he is in at the moment as the fields are really boggy and he eats his lickit within 30mins

HI there Gorgeous_george! How's it going, with the wild lungeing? and the riding? How is your nerve (bit flaming windy today though wasn't it?) any success or any good feelings? Is he behaving himself?

I just get my fruit knife (the one I cut his apples and carrots up with) and stick it in the top of the swede and then twist it down, as if I was screwing the knife in. I find it makes a hole quite easily that way.

It helps, of course, if the knife is long enough to go all the way through.

You need a knife with a narrow strong blade. Put the tip of the blade in at the top of the swede and start twisting. The blade will dig out a tube. Make sure it goes in straight. Then do the same from the other side angling it so it meets in the middle. Only takes 30 seconds once you've done a few.

Nah its easy peasy to do with a knife. Worked this out whist me and my friend hid from the rain in the tack shed and decided we would hang onein one of the ponys stable. All you have to do is push the point of the knife into the swede and twist, no problem.

Mind you my clever little pony ate his over night, he is just to smart for these things, he slowly edges his teeth up the sides then bites and destroys it

edited to say you bet me to my twisting knife plan

I think Baron will eat his overnight too, he bites chunks out the lickits which is why I want to try the swede - much cheaper option.

I will have another go with the knife, perhaps buy a longer one and try the twisty thing. I kind of dont really trust myself with the drill, but if the knife fails I may have to.

Screwdriver, but I don't bother hanging them up anymore it takes them longer to chase them round the floor than it does it eat them off the string

screwdriver with a piece of baler twine folded over the end, so as you knock it through, it takes the twine with it, giving you an instant rope.
my impatient horses learnt in 2 minutes that all they have to do is bash the swede as hard as pos with their head, and it'll break apart so they can scoff it off the floor...

I use the Steele thing that you sharen knifes with,

Use a knife to make a starting hole then put the steele on top then hang it on the ground.. works a treat, nice tidy hole

You know I thought it would be a lovely idea for me to do this with a swede for my mare, so I proudly sorted though Tescos swede selection, got OH to drill it for me, then presented it to Lady Muck ... who doesnt like swedes

. Gah and I thought the Irish ate anything .....

I hope you didn't throw it away - I know a little pony who will do anything for a swede

I don't bother with hanging it up anymore, it takes longer to put the hole in than it does to eat it. I put it on the floor or in his haynet. I did once put it in an empty hay rack and it was still there the next day just completely smooth where he had licked it all night but couldn't chew it - cruel mommy
