Hanging vegetables in the stables?!

My mare is bored senseless as cant go out at the moe,she has mud fever and we are swamped in the fields ATM. I'm going to put s hanging suede but what else can I use?
 
Brussel sprout stems go down well with several of ours, and parsnips with one - he likes bananas too, but they might be a bit messy to hang up!
 
Be careful! Mine is on box rest at the moment, and I thought he'd like it if I hung a swede off a beam. He went to take a bite, it started swinging, and he had complete nervous breakdown - threatened to climb out over the stable door!

Besides apples, carrots and swedes, you can for example give horses banana (with or without peel), beets, celery, lettuce, lemon, mango, melon, orange, parsnip, squash, turnip and watermelon (with or without rind).

You could always hang up several things so that your horse gets something to choose between, and since the subject is hanging up things and I think they're cute, I can't resist posting these...

I find hiding carrots in, and tying them to haynets works quite well as a boredom breaker.

celery, lettuce, lemon, mango, melon, orange, parsnip, squash, turnip and watermelon - i never knew you could feed all of these to a horse! given me so many more ideas :D

anyone ever fed these to a horse ,':/
 
My little mare used to eat oranges according to her old owner. She does like bananas, celery, lettuce, sprouts and cauliflower. I hung a swede up for her once, she tried to bite it, it swung and hit her on the nose, she was most put out. I tried hiding carrots in her haynet once, she pulled it down and stamped on it, she doesn't like it if you hide her food!
 
I used to hang a veg kebab which was a swede at the bottom, parsnip, carrot and apple.
Also hide a couple of carrots in his haynet.

My horse also enjoyed strawberries, raspberries, orange and in the summer we would go blackberry picking in the hedge at the bottom of his field...some days I would go to him at night and he looked like he was wearing purple lipstick!!!

I remember doing this for my pony years ago. It took me ages to get the bl**dy thing skewered and the string threaded through it. Undetered I hung it up for him. He took one bite, it came off the string and he'd cleared it within seconds. I never bothered again :rolleyes:
 
I was told to try the hanging swede thing too - had to use a step ladder to tie it the rafters - my boy came and, being the greedy so and so he is, he opened his mouth and launched at it - it evaded him, swung back and hit him in the face - he was not impressed and went nowhere near it after that!! I often put carrots either in his haylage or poking through the gaps in the net.
