Still no foalie

But... I turned her out this morning and he udders were absolute bursting out of their seams and when I brought her in (they usually reduce a small amount) I would say they were even bigger! The bag remained the same size but her actual teats had just filled completely.

For Hannah's sake I hope it comes soon... I don't know how she is walking with those things!

She was very clingy to me when I turned her out whereas she is usually not bothered, and seemed to be walking very slowly and quite stiffly. Poor thing, she has seriously had enough. I hate seeing her like this, but now I know everything is ok, the waiting is not bothering me so much.

Last night she was very restless and was getting up and down an awful lot. This morning at 5.30am she got down, got straight back up, got down again and then got up and stood with her head on the floor as though she was really unhappy about something.

Are horses like dogs (don't laugh) in that they get really restless before giving birth?

If so, sounds like it's going to be pretty soon! xxx

I don't know if I dare tell you this unless I remove all suicide methods out of your reach but we have had them go three weeks' over their due date before now.

She'll have it when she's ready and that's that really.
I would try and get as much rest as possible and rent a foaling alarm, at least that way you can get there pretty quickly.
On a serious note she does sound nearer to foaling than previously, with any luck the wait will be over within the next two days.

Henryhorn... I do have a foaling alarm, but I am a bit sceptical about it being the only thing I am relying on. A friend of mine checked on her horse on the way home from the pub and it had started foaling, and the head had appeared, but the alarm had not gone off because she did not sweat up and she was a maiden.

I know many horses do sweat up, but Hannah has had bad colic in the past, and never once sweated up or had a raised temperature. She deals with it by lying down and trying to roll, which is why I am not convinced the alarm will work.

I have it by my bed in the caravan though

I have been checking her every hour, but if I am honest it could be worse. The CCTV monitor is by my pillow so when the alarm goes off I turn it off and just open my eyes and watch her for a while to check she is ok. i wouldn't forgive myself if I relied on the alarm and missed it after 11 nights watching her very hour

for got to add that i PMd you back yesterday but your message box was full!! cant even remember what i wrote now!! i do hope disgrace is still behaving herself xx

you must be so tired...
I must admit those of ours we have viewed foaling always sweat, so hopefully the thing will work and you get some warning.
They do have a horrible habit of foaling when you least expect it though, one of ours suddenly got down in a gateway in the field at 12 lunchtime and within less than five minuteds produced a perfect foal.
Another having a red bag delivery gave little warning either, but 85% of foalings are normal and they don't need any help.
I think you have done all you can for now, I assume you are at work during the daytimeand your YO is keeping her eye out, or are you there all the time?
The first foal is always traumatic for the owner, much more so than for the mare I think!
We have four due this year and I hope by the time they are due the weather bucks up, here the weather doesn't get decent until at least May.
I hope she hurries up for your sake, you'll be exhausted at this rate!

She def sounds closer. I also hate to tell you of a mare I know of (not at work though) who was due on Feb 2nd and has been waxed for 3 weeks and still not foaled!!! She has been checked out and all is OK though. Foals don't appear until they decide to come out though - I had 2 last night decide to make an appearance within 20mins of each other

The clinginess could also be another sign that things are imminent - zebedee's mare gets very clingy just before foaling!

If you are that well set up to monitor her, then I would be setting my alarm for every 20mins tbth! A lot can happen in an hour - for better or worse! I don't want to alarm you, but I'd hate for something dreadful to happen to Han or foalie - remember my friend last year..........she lost her mare..... although what happened there was freakishly rare! I've spoken to a couple of Newmarket vets and they'd never heard of one.

Hate to say this and I know it is rare but there is no guaruntee that she will have it at night. One of our mares had been watched with a video for a week at night and went out one morning for a leg stretch and had it in the field at about 10.30. I just think they will come as and when they are ready.
Hope its not long now though for both your sakes.

I am not there during the day... off to work now. And there is no one there to check on her through the day until about 4pm, but my husband has been nipping down at lunch time for me.

I still think she has some way to go. Still not waxed up at all and although he boobs are huge there is no milk running yet. So I am thinking she won't be having it til next week at the earliest.

Becki - mares DO NOT HAVE to wax up or run milk in order to foal!!! Infact I prefer it when they do neither, as then you know the colostrum is good!!

I really feel for you both. I know my friend's donkey made an appearance after she had just checked her, while friend was having a cup of tea (during the day). Fingers crossed you are there.
Thinking of you!

Well Bex she could always do what Sas did & foal out in the field watched by her companions! At least now Mo knows where they come from, so hopefully not too much of a shock for her in June!

my mare never ran with milk. she waxed up a week before and got very full the last 24hrs. I had a lovely surprise early one sunday morning. and it was still damp.. ooohhhh bless. you must be soooooo excited. fingers cross for you....

Aww, poor Hannah. They always say the final few days are the worst for people, so I suppose it goes for horses too. Come on foalie!!

I am just about exploding with anticipation myself so god knows how you must feel - Hearing you describe her reminds me of the last few days before I had my daughter. We are all mammals so I expect we feel much the same - good luck
