No foalie, no more signs, but an absolutely horrendous morning!

I turned her out as soon as I got up, mucked her and Grace out, did haynets and feeds and then went down to bring her in before going home. She was stood by the gate which she has been doing the past few days, and whinnied at me as I walked to her. I opened the gate, put her head collar on and then had a quick look at her boobies (as I do everytime I bring her in).

There was blood all over the right hand side udder... It looked to be coming out from the pores around the udder. I couldn't stop crying, I turned into a complete emotional wreck. Phoned the vets, then my husband (who came flying down because I couldn't speak on the phone) and then the long wait for the vets commenced.

When he came, he looked her over, said she looked very well and that although he had never seen anything like it before, he believed it to be midges biting and because they are quite sensitive due to the swelling up and reducing of them, this is what caused them to bleed from little holes the midges had made! What a relief

He then said her back end is very slack and to keep a close eye on her as she may wax up an hour or so before birthing... great! The sign I was looking for might not even give me a warning.

*groan* was sure foalie would be here by now!! Pleased bleeding nothing serious, shes definitely keeping very secretive about it all....

Oh no! You must be exhausted after all that. I knew of a mare who didnt show any signs of foaling and just gave birth in her field one night, so keep your eye on her!! I am so excited, can't wait for foalie to be born.

OMG, i cant imagine how worried you mustve been, and i cant believe ive got to go through all this next year, im going to be a complete emotional wreck

How scary!! So glad she is ok though!!

Its gotta be soon, she is a week late now so she cant keep her legs closed for much longer surely!!

Did the vet give any indication of when it might be??

You'll be fine P_G... when is she going?

If everything goes to plan, I will breed from Hannah again I think because up until the past few weeks things have been pretty smoothe and she suits being pregnant.

Gosh what a frantic morning....shes really putting you through the mill.
How was last night? did you go?
Fingers x that its tonight...turning into a lovely sunny day, maybe a nice spring day will get things moving

Thanks Kelly1982... he just said only a fool would predict when a mare will foal

He just said he hind quarters are very slack, her vulva is looking prepared, but as she has not waxed up yet it would be a while or it could all happen in just a few hours. He did say that he would advise checking on her every hour in the night (which I have been doing unless I sleep through my alarm which has happened on quite a few occasions

) as she does look like she is ready.

Jella, I have been reading your updates and really feel excited for you. This foal is going to have two mum's by the sounds. Please dont fret, you are giving 110% into this, no one could do more. If I ever decide to have a foal, I would certainly like to send you my mare!!

BBs... really enjoyed it last night!

It has made me even more determined to learn how to long line properly because the horses just went so well on two lines. I think it would be really beneficial to Grace now she is in work and learning to carry herself, and it would also give her a variation in her work too. It is something I think I need to learn for when the foalie finally arrives, so just thinking of how I am going to get started.

Oh wow!! That is a freakish thing to happen. Poor Hannah and poor you and your hubby!! So glad she is ok - you do have a flask of something strong to had don't you, for when it's all over and done and the adrenaline stops pumping? You may find that you'll need it - never mind whetting the babies head!

HUGE HUGGLES hunny!!!!

You know this has got me gripped! The first thing I did was come into the New Lounge to see if you had posted - usually I am a faithful Soapbox girl!

Glad to hear the bleeding was nothing serious, I really hope she gets on with it soon. Looking forward to more updates.

YAY

What a nightmare for you...I hope you have the bestest healthiest foal there is after all this stress and waiting!

I have a nice bottle of pink champagne waiting for me in the fridge of the caravan that is just dying to be opened... in fact might just open it anyway and slug the lot on my own before the event at this rate

I'll try to get some pictures of her later on tonight now my trauma is over... I just knew that I had never heard or read about the bleeding before, and that is what made me panic beyond belief. I just started sobbing as soon as I had hung up from phoning the vet and then couldn't stop!

Thanks SSM... I am shattered, but there is no way I am giving in now and staying at home. Not after 10 nights in the caravan because you can guarantee the one night I went home something would happen.

Thanks HBII... I just wish she would get on with it. This all just confirms it is a colt, men are absolute buggers for keeping you waiting.

Poor Hannah and Becki. Not sure who I feel more sorry for at the moment. Will all be worth it in the end though. Glad the bleeding not too serious. Is it just me or does anyone else think that the midges are about a lot earlier this year?

Oh Becki I did a GOL (gasp out loud

) when I read about the blood - so pleased she's ok!

Any minute now...

What are you hoping for colt or filly or either as long as its healthy and arrives soon?
