Hi all,
It's been ages since I've posted on here.
I'm looking into the potential of putting my hanovarian mare to a connie stallion. I had a connie x tb before & she was absolutely amazing and I think a connie stallion would complement my mare really well ? she's a fantastic mare & now at 7 is finally starting to become level headed. Absolutely tonnes of talent & ability, pink papered so very well bred. Foal would be for me to keep.
2 questions:
1) has anyone done this cross & what was the outcome? Photos would be amazing
2) is breeding yourself worth the risk?

Not done that cross but growing your own is a tough call. Are you ready to possibly lose your mare, foal or both
Are you tough enough to endure the grief if things go wrong and the foal is deformed or a dummy
Are you looking for a specific height sex or colour or happy to ensure the foals future regardless
Have you at least as much money as a good horse woukd cost to buy it certainly is not a cheap option
Are you experienced enough to make the call for professional help if needed and able to pay for it
I loved raising foals it is the most rewarding thing you can do with horses if you get it right. Any mistakes are all down to you so it is a big responsibility. I don't breed anymore as now it is cheaper and easier to buy a weanling of the stamp, colour and sex I want. This carries its risks too as young horses are not necessarily an easy, healthy option
Hanovarians come in many shapes and sizes but it is the right way round to use a connie stallion on a bigger mare

Hi,
I am looking into doing the same thing but with the mare as a Connemara. After doing a lot of research I think that it would be definitely worth it. I have seen some really lovely horses with this cross.

Can not answer question one but on question two I can I have bred two for myself one when I was 20 and one when I was 50. First one work out just fine and I had 24 good years with him. Second one started well I bred a double ganger to the mare which is what I set out to do first 5 years went well but than it went wrong big time and she ended up being put down in her 6th year. It was heart breaking but would I do it again yes if I was 20 again now at my age NO.

Connie/TB is a fantastic cross not so sure about hanovarian/connie though.

Make sure you put blood over bone and not too much bigger than your mare the bone is most important a tb type hanovarian fine, a chunky 17hh not so much especially in a first foal 6 inches would be a maximum I would want so not much more than 16hh over a 14.2 mare maybe 16.2 if it was very fine boned. Your foal should finish up somewhere between parent size or could be tiny when full grown as first foals are often slightly smaller than average
