Just seen on FB that Rodney Powells horse died on the course between fences. Presumed heart attack.
Sad to see another top horse go :-(

How awful, poor Rodney :( I was at Belton when Llangarth Darcy collapsed at the finish - how bloody unfair that it has happened again :(

Its very very unusual for a horse to have a heart attack . But there are certainly problems that can simply kill a fit well horse. Sadly the veterinary world remains at a loss as to what the causes are. Lucinda Green lost a horse after it had just won Badminton . I have lost a horse out hunting ,the PM showed nothing for either horse . My suspicion remains that Atrial fibrilation can be a lot more deadly than the textbooks would indicate. There is so much we just dont know in Equine veterinary Medecine. My heart goes out to Rodney and all the connections .

Not sure of the provenance of this story as I am not aware RP is running anywhere this weekend! I am not saying its not but would be surprised if he ran it so soon after it won at ALW! Certainly not entered anywhere since then!

It was at Saumer and is reported on Eventing Nation.

Thanks Tonkatoy. I'm not in the habit of spreading rumours unless they have been substantiated on numerous sources.

RIP Happy Go Lucky

He ran on the Wednesday at ALW which, while close enough if they knock themselves to be able to get ready for the trot up, is not too close from an energy point of view. He would have galloped on around that day anyway, and again before travelling. There were more than a few competing that day who are at Saumur or Houghton.
Surely it is better to know the facts before replying on something like this. The horse was a much loved member of Rodney's team and I hope they take comfort from the fact that he was going really well and died while doing a job he enjoyed.

and died while doing a job he enjoyed.

I hate this saying. Personally I would not be happy to die riding a horse, yes I enjoy doing it but it would give me little comfort and I am unsure why its trotted out everytime someone dies playing sport.

Not really aimed at you oldvic just my general pet peeve.

I so understand why you posted this and having lost a horse while he was doing what he loved. I am still haunted by the way he looked at me after I had dismounted . "Dad whats happening ?" You are dying my beloved and I cannot do anything to save you!.
