Its a very pagan tradition my devoutly Catholic grandmother in co Cork used to practice and I like to keep it going. Traditional Irish faeries are not very nice and she used to leave them an offering so they wouldn't come into the house. Its a bit like paying off the mafia! You appease them, they leave you alone on the night when they are strongest. I love Halloween, I could bore you all senseless about it so don't get me started!
