Happy hoof vs chaff with supplement?

I own a 15.2 good doer that is in light work and has been living off grass and hay for the last few years, however his hoof wall has started to come away recently and my blacksmith recommended getting him a supplement and just putting it with a handful of chaff. However I was then told to just get happy hoof as it's low cal and has everything in it.. after purchasing it I read that the recommended daily amount was 2kg for a 15.2 overweight horse which is too much for me to be giving him. So what should I give him that won't make him gain weight but will provide him with the vits/mins he's lacking? I also thought about buying something like farriers favourite and putting it in a handful of silage as I have free access to this but was unsure whether he would eat it? TIA

The happy hoof wont give them enough minerals unless you feed the recommended amount which is a lot! I would get plain chaff and add minerals, or just add it to a handfull of happy hoof :)

I would personally feed chaff and a balancer to ensure he is getting all of his recommended vits and minerals and add appropriate supplement if the balancer does not make a difference.

Happy Hoof and their competitors are an expensive way to feed straw, and to make a difference you would have to feed a lot of it for his body weight. A good quality balancer should be better value and just enough chaff to mix with it.

Pro hoof, pro balance (both on ebay), forage plus or equivita. I'm pretty sure that there is another good one that I can't remember, sorry.

I use Baileys Lo Cal balancer for my good do-er cob but I know Spillers also do a good Lite balancer which is slightly cheaper than Baileys I do believe. Farriers Formula is an excellent supplement to compliment the correct balance of minerals he should be receiving from the balancer. Biotin is also good too as is Naf Profeet Formula.

Check the ingredients and maybe get a forage test done. You don't want to be supplementing iron, for example, if you have high levels of iron anyway. I mustn't feed anything with iron here (so the baileys would not be suitable).

Reading this is what iv just put on the balancer thread about topspec. I'm also very high iron and can't feed anything with extra iron? So all the " bagged" balancers are out for me, I use equimins advance complete with no iron but good copper with goes with my grazing and forage.
Somebody mentioned on here that happy hoof is a expensive way to feed straw, most of these bagged balancers are a expensive way to feed cheap by products " wheatfeed, oatfeed"
