I came across this forum due to the Amersham horses and now dip in and out of it every day. But I am sorry to say that isome of the things I read are making me really depressed. For example the post on junior riders and use of whips. Some horses seem to lead such miserable lives. Being constantly sold in sales and going through the hands of cruel dealers, landing up with horrible owners who are also cruel to them. I rode when I was younger and my love of horses has never left me. Can someone please make me feel better and tell me that this is not the norm and that the majority of horses in this country are loved, happy, well looked after and not abused. I am sure they are and there seem to be a lot of caring people on here but I am quite shocked that this sort of thing goes on.

I think when you take into account the scale of Operations Esther and the amount of work and time all the people involved are putting into it, you will realise that luckily the mistreatment of horses is not the norm and most animals are extremely well loved and well cared for. Unfortunately it is only the mistreated ones that get the press but at least that means that people are made aware and hopefully something can be done.

Don't worry so. Mine is well looked after - probably more than a cob needs to be

, and is treated like a star even though he is just a normal horsey.

I think the thing I don't understand is that things happen in front of other people. Like really thin horses being sold at horse sales and people's over use of the whip at shows. If someone was beating their dog at a dog show for example, or if a pet shop was selling really thin rabbits or guinea pigs, then someone would soon say something. How come horses seem to be immune?

I hope noone is offended as I am not being critical. I am just trying to understand and I do know I am probably a bit soft and a bit of a worry guts

Sadly plenty of dogs/other animals get beaten and not fed properly too

It seems to be a major flaw with humanity - we are capable of doing so much good, but so many people do so much harm

There are lots of people who look after their animals properly though and I'm certain the majority of people in this country especially are appalled by people who mistreat animals.

My horses are spoiled rotten btw

agree with jumpthemoon sadly its not just limited to horses.

my pony has been round the block so to speak before i got her, she's with me for life now ive got her, and extremely spoilt, happy and healthy. As are most horses belonging to HHO members im sure

I think the members of a forum such as this care about equines so much they want to come on here to ask advice / babble on about their beloved's all day... so there must be thousands of lucky horses out there that have owners who care enough to research the best feed, bedding, equipment for them and to want to witter on endlessly about them too! :-)
