My new baby horse is in a Fulmer happy mouth peanut bit and is going well in it so don't really want to change it however after 3 weeks use it is starting to break up on the middle of the bit ... I'm really not impressed as it's £40 and I need to buy a new one or get it replaced just in case it causes her discomfort or breaks. Is this normal with this bit ? I realise they are not as robust as metal bits but this is not fit for purpose.

Mine chewed through 3 in 3 days when I was backing him. I had to switch to metal. Finally now (accepting we don't care about competing) gone bitless and all his chompyness is gone and he's a much more relaxed horse.

It's fitted correctly and seems wierd but I would have thought the sides would be damaged if she was chewing . Would rather not start changing bits now although I will if needed in the future. Will try and change it and see how we go .just assumed they were more robust.

Yes I don't think they are very good really a lot of people use hard rubber ones as they are better than using plastic which is highly chewable.

I use Neu Shcule starter on most of my ponies, its robust, strong, and comfortable, and I sold it second hand when my boy needed a hanging cheek baucher when he was schooling.
I did try a happy mouth but felt it was too lightweight for the average mouth, they are good for very sensitive ponies. I start off with a rubber bit, left on for up to an an hour or so, they soon get over the chewing stage, if all is well.

Yes I had one of the same mouthpiece but loose ring and the pony chewed the middle section into sharp bits within 3 wears. Lovely soft bit that is not at all robust for the price!

I had one with a peanut but loose ring. It wasn't that old but snapped in 2 while I was hacking on my own. Luckily my giddy mare didn't notice before I did and I jumped off very quickly and grabbed her by the noseband. Had to phone hubby to come and rescue me with a headcollar and lead rope to get her home. I've heard loads of instances like this and would never use one again. Im currently backing a youngster in a happy mouth straight bar because he doesnt like a metal bit but as soon as I start doing anything with him he's going into a bomber bit or something similar and warm because I consider the happy mouths to unreliable to be safe.

I've ex changed it but because of what I've now been told and read will look to introduce a different bit. Been recommended neule scheule.
