First Happy New Year to one and all; may all your days be happy, stressless and painfree.

Secondly and sorry about this but I am on the rampage, about our neighbours (as in next but one house although 500 yards away) have just had the biggest loudest firework display known to man - and they didn't tell me so I am really seething. If I had known about it I would have brought Twiggy, Parky and Swallow down from the field (just across the lane and up a bit from their house) and stabled them for the night but we knew nothing about it (we don't move in their circles anyway so don't feel aggrieved about it that way!) You would have thought they'd have been neighbourly and slipped us the word, they know two of the mares there are in foal. If anything's gone wrong there will be hell to pay, I am seething. Will just have to wait and see until the morning now (wouldn't you know the torch is on the blink so wouldn't be able to see anything and besides, knowing Twig, the torchlight would freak her out as much as anything and cause more problems! It's not only me that it concerns, their next door neighbour, less than 100 yards from them also has some ponies turned out in the fields next to mine; don't think they'll be very happy either.
BTW, I don't think I'm over reacting am I? It's just that we've never had fireworks going off that locally for anything so never ever thought there might have been a problem tonight; naive I know - now!

Bang (excuse the pun!

) goes the quiet neighbourhood we live in; won't be able to take anything for granted again will we?.

mmmmm that was rather naughty and inconsiderate of them..... I would have a quiet word when you've calmed down, unless of course something has happened to one of the horses and then I think everyone will give you an alibi when you go and shoot them!

I think I'll check on the horses early and then hammer on their door whether they're still in bed or not, what do you think eh?! I might have cooled down by then, if I went now I'd only end up making a prat of myself big time!

First of all Happy New Year

Secondly, I hope your horses are all ok after the firework display.

Thirdly, consider this. If your neighbours are non-horsey they may genuinley not have known that fireworks could cause fright to horses and it would not have crossed their minds to warn you or the other horsey neighbour.

I would definately suggest you go to see them this morning, but be polite and rational and explain to them that they should have given you warning because, blah blah blah, and you would appreciate it if they have more fireworks nother time, if they would let you know in advance.

There's no point getting uptight and ratty with them as this will ruin future relations and they definately won't give you warning another time. Sometimes you never know when you are going to need your neighbours help and it's always best to stay on reasonable (at least) terms with them.

Hope all goes well.

Happy New Year...Speaking of neighbors; ours the other morning was playing around with his gigantic tractor right over the fence line on the riding trail separating our two properties. He raises cattle and trotters(much in the same manner btw.)

Anyway, 3 days later, while hacking out, we all decided to hang a right, upon leaving our farm, instead of heading left and toward the village, etc, like we had been doing all this week. Out of nowhere all 4 horses went a little crazy and there I saw the dead cow!

That S.O.B. has 160 hectars(400 acres,) and he has to leave the dead animal not 150 yards from my door, dog, and horses! Since this man(and his money,) have moved in 4 years ago, they have destroyed the riding trail with his tractors(2000 year old Roman Hiway,) since he leaves ALL his stock out all Winter long, threatened to kill my dog, insulted the mayor AND EVERYONE HE MEETS, and I could go on.

I took out the cellphone and called the gendarmes. Three(3) days left out! When he threatened to kill my dog I already hopped the fence and tried to provoke something 'manly' out of the jerk(he 20 years my junior!,) but no, he insults at a distance and clams up(and backs up,) when you approach him!

Not a good way to start off the year, ranting like this(but I feel better for it...)

Remember the old saying," Thank god we can choose our friends, because we can't choose our family?" The same sadly applies to neighbors...

Tell me about it, it was like the Somme round here, have never heard so many fireworks. And they went on for ages. Ended up with one dog sleepign in my bedroom as she is really scared of them, luckily others and horses were okay.

Suspect you have the same problem as us, being commuter distance from both Liverpool and Manchester, our area has been taken over by folks who like the idea of living in the country but really have no idea of how to live in the country. They are absolutely amazed when you tell them animals don't like the loud bangs of fireworks!

Hope your horses are all okay this morning, wishing you a very Happy New Year.

PS Went to the Boxing Day meet at Malpas, what a crowd! Think we might stay with N Shrops today, they are meeting at a pub!!

I think that's unlikely. I remember countless TV campaigns reminding people to keep their pets indoors during the firework season because they get frightened. It's only common sense to assume horses might get scared too.
I would've let my neighbours know if I were going to have a firework display anyway, out of courtesy, but that's just me.
I'm sure MFH_09 isn't really going to murder her neighbours.

Thanks for all your kind thoughts!
I have cooled down a bit this morning particularly as I hot footed it up to the field dreading to see what I was going to find and the girls were happily grazing away without a sweat mark on them! If anything had gone wrong, no doubt they would have been sweated up good time and their backsides are very clean and dry too; I'll just keep my fingers crossed that there's not a delayed reaction (don't know if that can happen tbh)
In light of their ok iness, I didn't bother the neighbours then (although last night I was going to hammer their door down whether they were up or not!) as
a) they have a houseful of visitors and I would have looked the biggest country yokel! and b) as the mares are ok this time, thank goodness.
I'll have a quiet word with them later this morning when no doubt they will bring hungover friends along the common here for a bit of fresh air and just explain how dangerous it could have been for anyone with animals! They've only been here about 18 months and are upmarket ex townies with no pets (very nice though with a good sense of humour which they need around here!) so it probably didn't occur to them to let us know.
Neighbours with cattle have already rung me this morning moaning about the fireworks which were going off just over their young cattle that live out (and were going mad too!) so it's not just me. As they said, if we had been forewarned there wouldn't have been a problem so I have been nominated hamlet spokesman to ask them nicely if they can let us know next time; we're not killjoys and don't want to be heavy handed about it but that could have put animals in danger without them realising it at all.

MM! I laughed; the meet today is known for the abundance of drink and grub! Hope you have a good day anyway!

what if we all catch some rats (as there seem to be a lot of problems with them at the moment !) and send them to you to infest his house ! You can also have the squirrel which has taken up residence in our attic if you wish.

Theres no excuse for someone to be so unneighbourly as to let off explosives without having the courtesy to warn their immediate neighbour. Even if they dont have horses - dogs and cats can be as frightened even if its not so dangerous as with horses/cattle.

I would def make sure they know you expect to be told. After all, we all understand some disruptions are unforseen, thats life, but firework displays are planned for in advance, hence no excuse IMO.
