Two months ago today E passed his vetting, two months tomorrow he arrived at his new home.
Despite 27 years of being around horses I have never owned my own and it was a huge and terrifying step to take - I remember the first afternoon he arrived simply looking at him him thinking 'crumbs, what have I done, that 700kg creature with a mind of his own is my responsibility, what have I done!?'. Two months down the line and I haven't had a second of regret. I love him and I think he is slowly beginning to love me back.
Today was a lovely day, we went for a hack with a friend and for the first time he was completely relaxed and happy, pottering along an a loose rein and just being a complete dude! My only complaint being that when asked to gallop a stubble field he gave me a very beautiful collected canter... not complaining that he didn't charge off, just that we were beaten quite so soundly!!
But best of all, when I put him back out in the field he and one of his field mates had a hoon around for a few minutes (cue me with my heart in my mouth as they did handbrake turns in gallop) and then they stopped and groomed each other. Up until now they have all got on, but E was rather stand offish and the other two were definitely bezzies and E the outsider. This was the first time I've seen them be friends. So happy. My boy is settling in.
