I decided I had to share our story of the amazing Mikey. We bred Mikey out of my 148cm show pony. He was a stunning foal but we decided to sell him as a foal. He went to England for good money to a showing producer. Around October last year Mikey would have been 2 years old and we realised we hadn't heard him in any results and we decided we should give them a call see how he is. Of course then my Aunt got very sick so we never got around to it. In November we got a private message off a girl who said she believes she has bought a pony we bred in Beaston market.

Sure enough there was Mikey looking awful. She said she had bought him for £50 but he is a rig and she doesnt want to expense of the operation. She decided to explain this to the seller who told her if she didn't want the pony he would bring him home and feed him to his dogs. Of course the girl took mikey straight home but didn't want him. We were at this time buying anew Section B mare and decided we would buy Mikey of her and bring him home on the same boat.

At 5am we pull it tiny, wormy pony off the lorry. And for the first week he would only walk anywhere and very lethargic. Then about 2 weeks later he did his first trot and we were in tears since then he has improved leaps and bounds. We never thought he would go showing we just wanted him to have a good life. But Mikey has become and amazing Part Bred pony. Now at 3 he has only been beaten once out of 6 shows and is the happiest pony.

I have some photos but cant figure out how to attach them but they are in the Mikey album on my profile

Yeah sadly however the girl who rescued him have been amazing and I can understand it cost us €300 to have him gelded and I understand that they didn't want that cost. They have come and visited him and even shown him at one show. I forgot to add another bit apparently (this is sort of only a rumour as no transfer of owner was done) but Mikey and a Sec A mare were old as a pair to the man who had them at the sale for £80 !!!!!!! :O

Lovely to see the transformation.

I think it's a shame more people don't contact the original breeder if one of their horses falls on hard times. Like you I've bred a few foals. 4 to be exact, of which 2 survive and 1 of those 2 has never left home or her mum. But only last month I had a chat with the girl who bought my first one, in 1997. She told me what she knew about him now, including that his 4th owner had handed him over to a local horse sanctuary, now closed, but the 3rd owner believes she' s seen him in a field about 3 miles from where he was born ,but I've not yet found him.. He's never been permanently more than 10 miles away in all his 18 years but my point is if any of his owners had contacted me I know I'd have come to an arrangement so as he had a proper caring home with me, if nobody else. I feel I owe something to the foal I bred, even if I haven't seen him in years.

He's absolutely stunning, what a lovely story and well done to the girls who rescued him from Beeston.

I agree with Sunnyone about contacting the breeders or former owners. I managed to trace the breeders of a Shire mare that had fallen on hard times and wouldn't have seen the winter out.
With some diplomatic negotiations, they managed to get permission for her release and turned up despite heavy snow to take the old girl home for Christmas.

I believe it was a US racehorse trainer who started it but we are thinking of making stickers to put in the passport t say if the horse falls on hard times get in touch with us.

Thanks he is such a superstar, he started lunging 3 days ago for breaking and he is so laid back its amazing
