Just had the dreaded hone call from the yard that dizzy has walked out of her stable hopping lame with heat swelling around the lower right fore leg! My poor little mare first her back and now this our first few months together haven't been the easiest

Mud fever? Thought my 38yrold would need to be PTs but after every evening/morning of scrubbing creaming and wrapping he's a survivor! Hope yours are ok?

Got up to the yard and my poor horse practically fell out of her stable looking very sorry for herself. I have never seen a horse as lame as she was this morning. Both of her front legs and back right were roasting and she point blank would not lift her legs for me to check the bottom of the hooves. So managed to gently coax her to the hose so I could cold hose and try and get her to lift her legs for me before I called the vet. I cried as she walked it was awful!!!
While I cold hosed she ate grass ok well thats an ok sign.
She also in irritation lifted her front left leg while I was hosing and low and behold the shoe on that hoof has half come off and twisted with the toe cap bent into the wall
How the hell did she manage to do that in her stable and have 3 hot legs?????
Called farrier and he was there in 10mins to take the shoe off and check it over, VERY luckily the toe cap hadn't punctured the bottom of her hoof, there is just a very large dent and probably a horrible bruise. So it got poulticed and padded. She was also ''surprisingly'' less lame after the shoe was taken off and we gave her some bute.
Popped her back in her stable and she happily went to munch on her hay.
Checked her legs again and there were no lumps or bumps and the heat and swelling had lowered although still warm.
Stood there for a while wondering how the hell she managed to do this and thats when I noticed the dents and scratch marks all over her stable wall which were definitely not there before! My only guess is she cast herself and judging by the marks had a very large panic getting herself uncast!! This has never happened before and she has decent sized banks and a huge stable! Poor little mare I really don't like thinking about how frightening that must of been for her
Anyway going to box rest her for the week and decided that as the lameness has improved a lot in 12 hours I am going to hold off call the vet for a couple of days and if she doesn't improve more in that time then I will get them out. She seems very bright in herself and pulled everything out of the grooming kit looking for carrots and she is being very affectionate. She had another bute this evening with dinner but not going to give her anymore now as don't want to cover anything up!
All in all a long day!!!!
