well my horse is currently on calm and conditioner by allen & page, but I've been advised to change it to something with magnesium that will help calm her. any suggestions on what feed would be best?

here are some general details on her:
15.2hh 7/8 thoroughbred, 1/8 welsh mare
twenty years old
little bit underweight but is improving every day
her overall behaviour is usually good but she can get excitable (shes being brought back into work at the moment so can be a bit stressy/OTT)

she is currently fed:

[breakfast]
1/2 scoop of calm and conditioner
1 scoop of applechaff
1 teaspoon of biotin
2 snapped carrots

[dinner]
1 scoop of calm and conditioner
1 scoop of applechaff
1 teaspoon of biotin
2 snapped carrots

thanks

You can just buy loose magnesium to add to feed - Feedmark sell it at a reasonable price; personally I would stick with the calm and condition and drop the applechaff if sugar is affecting her.

In that case I'd use a low sugar chaff, there are plenty about now, Hi ~Fi Lite or Alfa A Lite along with the top spec chaffs.
If you still want to make sure that weight is kept on I'd switch to oil as a conditioner alongside Speedibeet.

Get rid of the Apple Chaff for a start its very high in sugar!! As touchstone says change to a low sugar chaff there are lots on the market. No need for biotin either

You can buy magnesium on ebay ( buy the heavy ) Its very good for their feet too,

Keep the Calm and Condition and add oil to the feed

echo the others, loose the applechaff, and add a no added sugar chaff instead. If you aren't looking to put weight on then I would go for topspec topchop lite, if you would like something with more cals then I would try the new alpha a without molasses that dengie have just started doing. For extra condition (if needed) I would use microionized linseed, non heating and full of 'goodies' for the coat, feet and joints. Cheap and no prep needed to add to feed. Calm and condition is fantastic stuff and I've not known it to wind up any horse - even the sensitive souls that go a bit wacky on anything! I would add heavy mangesium to her usual feed - I get mine from http://www.naturalhorsesupplies.co.uk/p/category/0802204936-Magnesium+Supplements/ and get heavy magox.

TopSpec Cool Condition cubes have magnesium in them and they are fantastic. You don't have too feed much( my two poor doers get 2 mugs a day) so it's cost effective and I have noticed a very good calming effect!
Hope this helps
