Hard lump on the girth area (also in veterinary)

HELP Noticed today as I was tacking my horse had a hard lump about the size of your palm where his girth goes. He was completely oblivious to it allowing me to poke and prod it, but even so I decided to give riding a miss. He had a slight lump yesterday when I went on a hack, but it hardly protruded so I didn't worry about it, but it's now huge!
He's a bit on the thin side and last summer reacted badly to fly bites, so I thought it might be bite. Any ideas what it is? Any ideas are welcome!!
 
Could it be a rub or a pinch? Are there any joins on the girth or straps that might apply pressure? Is it a bit grubby or sweaty? Even a loop on the outside for a martingale can produce pressure on the inside of the girth when it's done up.
 
I use a soft leather girth with elastic on both ends which hasn't pinched or rubbed so far, but I wouldn't rule it out.
Also the lump is underneath by the side, so just behind the elbow. No hair has come off as yet.
 
In answer to your query, It could possibly be a girth gall which is common with elsaticated girths as they can be done up too tigght without anyone being aware, It may be other things but this sounds like a girth gall, I'd use a girth sleeve for a few days and avoid doing any work which will make your horse sweat, if its hardening it means its getting better! I'd sudocreme it and then use surgical spirit on it until it heals! :) hope this helps! x
 
My horse had the same when I used an elastic girth (as a one off-borrowed)

It took over 2 weeks to go down, without riding.

It's something to do with the blood capillaries being damaged and then when you release the girth (that was too tight) the blood rushes back to the area giving a lump. (something like at anyway)

I felt awful but it did go and i will never use that girth again!
 
My pony had one it was no where near the size that OP's horse has got, was about 1.5 cm, it was there for well over 2 weeks. I also use a girth with elastic both sides.

RI said it was a hole to tight some time last year (OH likes to tack up for me) after loosening it a hole and not pushing it up that last hole it's never happend again.
