Hi, My JRT who spends most of his time down rabbit holes at the field, has developed itchy hard lumps through the thickness of his skin on the scruff of the neck and top of his rump. He has been scratching incessantly for about 2 - 3 months but it was only today when I clipped his coat off with my horse clippers that I found all these sore patches. Also found a couple of dead tick still attached to his ear. Everywhere else no sign of ticks or any arthropod evidence.
I have not used any tick repellents so far this year as last time I used one he developed a thickened lump under the skin between the shoulder blades and the back of his head where the stuff was applied. I took him to the vet with this and vet gave him an injection of an anti-inflammatory that cost £25.00 and did nothing!
I have used MSM ointment from Naf but thats had no effect so far.
Any ideas what the lumps may be and any suggestions for remedies?
 
Might be infections were ticks were or an allergy to ticks or other parasites.

Might be grass allergy.

I would take him back to the vets to be on the safe side. Aloe vera gel (proper gel, not aloe vera based cream) can take any heat or itchyness out in the meantime.
If he has been scratching incessantly for two or three months then I would have had him back to the vet before now, sometimes these things build up over months and then explode, but doesn't sound like it is anything too serious.
 
He is always scratching and licking at himself so I have come to think he is just neurotic, but also I always run the flea comb gently through him every day when he comes home plus he gets a bath about once a fornight and gets hosed down when muddy. He has to be fairly clean as he sleeps on our bed at night so I am fairly sure its some sort of allergic reaction to something, but heaven knows what. We do find about one tick per fornight but mostly when they are small or even before they bite.
Can anyone also suggest an effective tick lotion too, somethig that really works as spot on and the ones from the vet seem to be useless.

Well the vet can give anti-histamines and Malaseb shampoo which is good for allergic types.
Re the allergy, could be grass, pollen (tree, flowers/plants, grass) the detergent you use to wash the bedding, carpet, household products, anything, it's trial and error unless you can afford the full allergy testing.
If it is an allergy, it can be a bugger to manage but lots easier once you know the triggers.

What's he fed on? Is a wheat-free feed an option?

Not many ticks about here so can't help with lotion.
 
It is common for dogs to come out in lumps/hives when they have an allergic reaction but usually all over the body, but with him having frequent ticks on him, I would maybe have him checked esp if he is being neurotic with the licking/chewing.
feeding garlic is apparently good deterrant for fleas and ticks, never tried it me self but I know a fair few who swear by it.
 
I'd cut the Bakers. I know it probably isn't related but it is full of additives and colourings and if he is a sensitive dog, that won't help. The rest of his diet sounds great and can't see what extra benefit Bakers would have.....
 
hi there I have a dobaman that sound very simular. he is fed on a allergy free food and he has a hayfever pill everyday while the pollen is around, just one of the homebrand of any supermarket. Hope you find out what is causing it, it took us over 9 months but it has been under control now for 5 years
