Any ideas? It is a lump that is entirely covered by hair, seemingly no "center".

Is behind shoulder, just infront of where saddle sits, half way or so down the knee roll.

Don't think saddle related, as have fitter out quarterly (atleast! I'm a bit of a worrier)

My lad had this sort of lump on his neck. He had it fir a fair while, it stayed the same. Then it started growing. Got vet out and he was booked in to horspital to have it removed. It was a type of tumour. Thankfully all removed and nothing had spread.

My haffie had a hard lump that sounds similar on her chest when I got her. I would often rub my hand over it and gently squeeze it just because it was there. One day when I did it it burst and puss came out. It was minging but went away and never returned.

maybe safer to ask the vet though.

It may be a sebaceous gland lumpy thing which has a smart name I can never remember (no surprise there then). Old mare has one in her side and has never been a problem.

I have known of something like this before, it was the site where an insect bit my pony. Left a hard pea size lump, it took several years to disperse. My veteran mare at the moment has something similar on the inside of her hind leg just above the hocks, I shan't be doing any thing about it, I think these little cyst type lumps can appear but cause no harm as long as not in a place where tack rubs/touches. A mare at a yard I was once at had a small lump around her ear, the owner had to put the bridle on in a manner to not touch it or she literally was climbing the walls. I might have had that seen to!

Sounds like a granuloma.

Come up without warning, not sore, usually cause no issues.

Sometimes stay forever, sometimes go back down.

You can inject with steroid, whereupon a high % will disappear. Can operate, which will get rid of it but leave a scar.

If it isn't causing bother, I would leave it, unless on a grey, when I would remove and have a biopsy.

I would, however, watch it, as granulomas tend to stay the same or go down. If they change for the worse, it is likely something more suspicious.
