On Friday morning my 13 yr old mare came in with a painful, swollen sublingual gland. She ate her hard feed ok but couldn't swallow haylage at all, just chewed it and spat it out. Vet came out, without gag unfortunately, but said he was able to get a good look at her mouth & there was no obstruction or anything visibly wrong. Diagnosed infection in mouth (temp slightly high) causing pain at back of tongue preventing her swallowing longer length fibre.
Today, after two days of antibiotics and bute she was able to eat a bit of haylage but now that the swelling in gland has reduced slightly I can feel a hard lump along the edge of her jaw protruding into the space where the gland lies. Her teeth were checked last month, just routine rasp and no problems found, any ideas what the problem could be?

Old tooth fragment? Bone chip? Calcified soft tissue from long term swelling? Just a wild guess as I have no idea really. I would get vets to have another look and maybe ask them to xray?
