Hard Wood Shavings?

Does anyone use them? I've heard mixed reports although there are a couple of horses on the yard that use them, seemingly with no ill-effects. They are about a third the price of normal shavings from a local saw mill, is the only reason I ask...

The place where my dad used to work did bags of softwood and hardwood shavings, but the hardwood ones weren't very nice. They didn't soak up the wet very well and if you got any of the hardwood dust in your eye you knew about it! Personally I would always stick to softwood.
