I need to get some hardcore/road scalpings stuff to put down outside the stables and by the gateway, where can I get this from?

Ironically, my mum actually works for hampshire highways, and can get the stuff for free whenever she wants, however as I live in Kent, getting me some is another matter - she is trying but if anyone has any ideas of places I can get some from that would be fab

I don't really want to pay if I can help it....I know a lot of farmers often get it for free and whilst I don't mind paying cash in hand to the people that take the scalpings off the road I'm loathed to pay £40 per tonne when I will probably need a few tonnes!!

As I said my mum is trying to get hold of some for me, and has contacts 'up here' but its just a case of when really.

I often see hardcore offered free in the classifieds, in the back of my local paper. Worth taking a look in your local rag.

If you get it for free be clear what is coming, a friend got some a while back and there was all sorts in there, chunks of brick and breezeblock and glass etc... if its free its also harder to reject it when it arrives!

Try posting on freecycle. There are often offers of free hardcore, tho they would probably expect you to pick it up. Failing that try your local household recycling centre... My dad is currently doing some building work in his garden at the mo and has been taking his hardcore/rubble there..

google Aggregates companies, we have just had 40 tonne crushed brick delivered @ £6.95 per tonne, then topped with crusher run which sets like concrete for £9.75 per tonne not expensive really, and has made a lovely yard.
When we were looking to make our yard we looked at getting road planings but loads of people said it puddles up alot and rots horses feet?!

We have had scalpings put down in the gateways (which I really didn't want) and they are more trouble than they are worth as now the fields are a bit wet the horses get mud in their feet, walk across the scalpings which stick in the mud and when they walk onto the concrete they have big sharp stones in their feet and hobble around. I think I need to have sand or grit put on top. Scalpings are very sharp.
