Who else has a flower of a cob - or is just me :(

He's sunburn prone, allergic to buttercups and barley and now he has rolled in or on something and has hives!

He also jumps out of the field and comes in when it's too cold or wet for his liking and is a fussy eater (about his own food - if it's someone elses food he'll eat anything) *sigh*

He has some TB back breeding but my last TB was hardier than this chap. Good thing I think too much of him to sell him!

Anyone else with a cob who isn't as tough as they 'should' be ?

Mine is as tough as old boots - not! Allergic to dust/hay/bedding/cereals/bites and stings, gets choke at the drop of a hat - BUT will happily live out in all weathers except when she escapes IN and tries to eat the prohibited substances - in her case hay!

Sorry I don't have a similar cob, but since I'm often threatening to trade my softie, self-harming TB in for a cob you have made me think again lol!

lol.. not just me then!

I thought I was doing myself a favour as well as fulfilling a longterm dream, by buying a cob.. New baby and busy business + hardy type of horse = easy life (you would think).. Er.. No.

Like I said, good thing he's so lovable and such a Christian to ride/do or I'd be exceedingly cross!

I had one of those for 10 years (until he died) and swore I'd never have another - my last TB was a tough chap - live out unrugged in any weather, very good doer, never ever lame, sick or sorry!

Allegedly tough cob - needs suncream, Aloe vera and fly spray applications twice a day plus a fly rug, UV Facemask and a home made nose-parasol in summer plus he's a cold wee chap in the winter and needs snuggling up in rugs

Luckily though he's surefooted and canny and doesn't seem to self harm (yet!)

Mine can be the b***h from hell to ride, don't know why I keep her really, after a lifetime of sharp ponies and Tbs etc. thought I was going to get a cob and hack round the block on a long rein, whilst counting my ever increasing money 'cos she'd be so cheap to keep...own business, bloke to maintain etc. it was meant to be an equine downsize...ha ha if only I'd known!

my loan cob was a nightmare.

Day 3 on Full livery jumped in a ditch, got stuck, almost drowned (insurance wouldn't pay in first 7 days of cover) had to have her knocked out and dragged out by tractor. That night escaped from stable, ate 17 feeds and started on large roll of haylage (luckily didn't colic!) that cost me £450 plus a case of very nice wine to all the farm hands who spent hours in deep mud trying to save her.

She got kicked and got a haemotoma on her chest, had it drained, it filled again, had it drained and a tube inserted, when taken for a short walk, reared, rolled, pulled tube out so vet back out to re insert tube. Then she wouldn't allow tube to be taken out took 3 different visits to finally get it out.

Regularly got sunburnt despite applying factor 50 twice a day.

Lost 4 flymasks

destroyed 6 rugs

escaped from her stable despite it being on lock down and got stuck over the shetlands door until we could work out a way of extracting her.

Anyway the list goes on, cobs who said they were cheap and easy to deal with!

Current evasion, stops dead in road and throws its' head about looking for the fly that's landed somewhere near the saddle, despite the fact that she knows I knock them off if they're there, bought very expensive fly-repellent yesterday, she thinks it doesn't work - I think it does - then refuses to move forwards or sideways as there is a car coming towards us - of course, she would rather run backwards into the car or ditch than do what I ask...

rangerover - What a cheeky monkey! I know what you mean about trying to downsize.. it so didn't work out with regard to care/finances but ride wise - I do love my Cob!

He's mannerly and forward going (apart from in company when he suffers from some sort of reduced responsibility thing and gets on a go-slow  The more horses, the slower he goes!) and I love that I can not ride him for a fortnight (or more :o) and he's exactly the same as if he had been ridden every day. Jumps 1.20m rails without batting an eyelid too and takes care of me when I ride like a lemon :) So the ridden part worked out! Loose rein hacks around the block happen a lot!

ETA - he's only 5 too :D

SuperWibble - shamefully that story makes me lol.. I remember you telling me about her. NIGHTMARE!

Ditto... and to the sun burn, the mites, the mud fever, the dislike of the lighest of rain showers, panics if there isn't another horse within 10 feet, the small fotune I spend on shampoo trying to clean his white bits, etc . But he is a very loveable character and despite our occisional differences of opinion in the school, he has turned out to be a superb hunter, with lovely manners at the meet and in a crowd.
I also though I was horse down sizing, from a much larger fancy pants dressage prima donna, but actually that one was considerably tougher and cheaper to run!!

My cob gets swollen eyes so has to have eye drops and fly mask on, as well as her nose covered up as she has pink skin and gets sun burnt! She used to be hogged, but I have left her mane grow as she had sections of pink skin on her neck and was getting sunburnt!!

Smurf has a sunburnt nose as he wont keep a flymask on and licks his suncream off

And its not 'self harming' but the farrier is due out to replace his 5th front shoe of a fortnight today, his feet are fab, (as is my farrier ;)) he is just very very adept at getting them off :(

sunburn, mud fever (hope fully sorted with POS), had really bad thrush when I got him, farts when I groom his tail, and can be soooooooo strong on the ground, I have to wrap his leadrein round his schnoz.

On the bright side, he is a very friendly chap, follows me everywhere, whickers to any horse he meets to say hello, is best mates with a mini shetland, got great barefoot feet, and is gentle and very kind. Love him to bits :D

front or back? Mischief had this and then I bought a couple of doughnut boots which helped (until they disappeared from the tack room!)

All fronts, the first two he got off on the fence, so we electrified the field, then the next two I reckon he probably overreached off, so I turned him out in O-R boots, now hes lost another!

i think he's just got you wrapped around his little hooves!! ;)

Ron is pretty tough, only needs suncream on his pink nose and around his eyes. never been sick or sorry tho, even when he over-reached and took half of his heel off!

Mine's decided to be allergic to Hunters (or nay other type of new bedding), gets awful sunburn if he's not smothered in Factor 50 and a UV nose net, is the fussiest eater I've ever met, gets appalling mudfever and is extremely affectionate and a very good doer, but a complete wuss re dogs and odd noises. God, I love him!

Get a fieldsafe for over the top, hun-works a treat with mine but gets it off in under a minute without it.

Tinytrigger-mine does that wanting to go behind thing, I thought she was the only horse that ever did it, I've never had one do that before, it's really weird, if I ask her to go more forward she just leads to behind the bum of the horse in front with her shoulder-it knackers me! But she is sooo safe on the ground, to handle, lead etc. and very sweet natured, when she's not being hormonal!
