Harness racing

A first for me today. Going to watch harness racing at York. Is it the same as normal racing with race programmes and betting?

How did you get on? I was there on Saturday for the Championship meeting and saw a lot of new faces which is encouraging :) still a touch disappointed in the lack of advertising though.

Your feedback would be useful as I'm friends with the track owner and track manager and both are always looking to make the experience more enjoyable for the paying public. Did you enjoy it?

Nah, there's a fixture list available on the BHRC website (www.bhrc.org.uk), looking at a map I'd guess that the closest meeting to you would be the meeting at Wolverhampton racecourse on 16th August. We don't often race on the proper racecourses as the Jockey Club are trying to keep us out but a meeting there has been arranged and I'm going for the first time :)

We really enjoyed it:) Had a good chat with a young lad from wales who trains and he explained alot of what was going on. Won on my first bet:) Meadowbranch Ash. We will be going again. It was a nice relaxed atmosphere without all the crowds and ponsiness.

You may have seen me there, I was the bookie's clerk with the big Scottish bookie (on the end of the line nearest the bar)!

It was great racing, I LOVE York anyway, possibly my favourite track in the UK but the quality of racing there was fantastic on Saturday :)

Was the boy called Rhys by any chance? He was the trainer/driver of Baby Rosa and Foolaround (where we lost the most money trading). He's a friend of mine!

Edited because I didn't read your post properly, but glad you're considering coming again! I want people who've never been before to see how fun and welcoming and exciting a sport it is!

I don't know what the lad was called but he had blonde hair and was very helpful. I also backed Foolaround:) Was gutted when Meadowbranch Ash broke pace in the final and lost it. Which is the next good meeting at York to go to?

Ash was the horse we wanted to win, he was very unfortunate with the cafuffle at the start. It would have been nice for the stables as they unfortunately had to have a horse put down at the track the week before :(

There's a few meetings in July and August (13th July, 3rd & 10th August, and the National Pacing Futurity on 31st August). The next *top* meeting in my opinion, and the next one I'll be attending, is the Sire Stakes meeting on Saturday 21st September (our 2yo filly is entered to run), and it'll be similar to the meeting just gone with races for 2, 3 and 4yo horses.

My favourite meeting though is York Sale Day (Saturday 5th October), where the racing is preceded by the sale of pacers and trotters, including the track owner Mick Welling's amazing yearlings!
