Harness with handles

When I first got my pointy-ish dog I bought a ruff wear harness - and justified the cost because everyone on the sighthounds forum raved about them. But I just couldn't get it to fit right - she looked uncomfortable in it (the under belly strap seems to come so far back - i guess for support when lifting).

I have now got a SASS harness for mine and they love them.

Uh oh, a voice of dissent.

I am a bit worried about that but equally worried about using it for support without a rear strap as it's the hind end I need to protect. Decisions, decisions . . .

I have a lurchery thing and finally gave in to a ruffwear one 4 yrs ago after various others that just didn't suit. It is amazing, looks as good now as the day I bought it, get used all the time as my dog is deaf so often drags a longline with it. He is regularly hoiked over stiles and gates in it, or picked up to cross cattle grids, and I use it a lot when going up and down cliffs and mountains, or even just big rocks. He never slips out of it, and he has hip and back problems as well. No regrets at all.

I keep looking at the julius ones because they do fab "I'm deaf" labels for them, but they just aren't as secure as the ruffwear, and would be rubbish for lifting my boy - I can do it with one hand in the ruffwear and his back end is fine.

Sometime it is better to get a smaller rather than larger size - he is about the size of a collie but wears the small harness as the medium interferred with his dangly bits and also lifted him too far back (cutting into his stomach), but this one lifts him well when adjusted properly. I also have the back strap a little looser so it doesn't bother him at all during walks, he just feels it when lifting.
