I've noticed a bit of a furore on Facebook about the proposed inclusion of Devils Claw in the FEI Prohibited Substances list, and I don't really get why people are kicking up a fuss.

It is used for its (real or perceived) analgesic effect, and there is no other reason to feed it. Therefore, you would only feed it to a horse that you know to be in pain. If you know that a horse is in pain you shouldn't be competing it.

Simplistic, perhaps - but it's common sense, surely?

Just to add - I use a Harpagoside supplement from my vet, and have found it very effective on a horse with DJD in his hocks, who needs a bit more help in cold weather to get his motor running. I'm not arguing the toss about the substance itself - just the morality of using said substance to make a horse appear sound enough to go out and compete.

Exactly... you wouldn't compete a horse on bute, why compete on harpagophytum. It is already on the banned list in France.

As an aside... I was actually horrified at how many drugs are ALLOWED in competition in the US
