Hounds are said to be great family dogs, but the fox hound is too big and the beagle is a bit small. Does the harrier hound make a great family pet, (internet reserch seems to think so). If so where are the breeders?

Thanks

Hounds...family dogs?

Ive not heard that AT ALL....

quite the opposite...

I wouldn't have thought you can get them as a pet?

We've walked a lot of Harrier puppies, they are really sweat dogs but a bit mental and tend to bugger off hunting quite a lot once they get to a certain age!

I'm sure if you had one from a pup with the intention of it being a pet then they would be ok.

I know non of our's would ever be suitable as a pet. But thats not saying a harrier that is distent from hunting relatives may??
I don't know of any pet harrier breeders though.

Just curious but why do you want a hound as a pet?

I did one of those dog selector tests, and it recommended an American Foxhound and a Harrier as our top two pics

I do know of a few people with American Foxhounds as pets (all of them rescues) and they're surprisingly mellow--more so than beagles, all of which I've found to be quite insane and constantly on the go.

I like the sound of the Harrier because of its size and look and it is recomended by the following as an excellent dog with children:

http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/harrier.htm

"The Harrier is somewhat more playful and outgoing than the Foxhound, but not as much as the Beagle. Cheerful, sweet-tempered, and tolerant, it is excellent with children. This pack dog is good with other dogs, but should be supervised with non-canine pets - unless it is raised with them from puppyhood. It prefers life in a pack with people, dogs, or both. This active dog likes to go exploring, sniffing and trailing, so be sure to keep it on a leash or in a safe enclosed area. Some Harriers like to bay."
