I am already looking for next year's summer holiday (I need something to give me a boost through the winter months! :D) and am looking at the Outer Hebrides - probably Harris (for the hills and beaches).

Has anyone been with dogs? Any recommendation on self-catering accommodation, areas to visit (I enjoy walking, wildlife and seeing some of the local history) on any of the Western Isles (but Harris in particular) and generally how dog-friendly the Isles are.

Cheers.

a friend did earlier this year, I can ask her if you like?

We would love to go-maybe next year. We're going back to Mull this autumn-not as far afield but one of my favourite places.

Yes please! I get one child and husband-free holiday a year, where my sister and I go with a dog apiece. We visited Mull a few years back and loved it - will definitely go again in the future. I was really pleasantly surprised by Arran, where we went last year, too.

I won't see her until tomorrow but will ask her. I've not been to a bad island yet but am especially fond of Mull-have been doing a project for work up there for a few years so have visited it a few times. I really want to go to Shetland too.

Not Harris but I was on North Uist years ago. What I enjoyed most was the huge deserted beaches where I could take the dogs and collect winkles and cockles, then take them home and eat them (edited: Eat winkles and cockles, not the dogs!) while watching TV! (Only one channel and not even that if the wind was in the wrong direction).

What I didn't enjoy so much was the horizontal rain and the midges.

If you enjoy fishing, the Outer Isles is the place to go. But enquire first. It is decades since I've been there and I expect it has all changed. Visiting for a holiday is fine but I wouldn't want to live there again. Harris is more "urbanised". if that's the right word!

Thanks DR - your posts always give me a chuckle.

I am not a fisherman (well, woman) but enjoy isolation, long walks with the dog, a good book in front of a real fire with a wee dram. I need to do more research I think ... not keen on the idea of urban Harris.
