Harrow or leveller?

I have a chain harrow - its great as it picks up any stray hay in arena at same time. I use it flat face down for arena (I am on cushionride) and then use it in fields as a harrow which really does seem to help the grass. I find grading arena once a week keeps it nice as I turn out daily in mine - without harrowing it I don't think it would have lasted more than a year - has been in now nearly 5 years ! Got my little harrow on ebay

ah ok! i hadn't thought to use it flat side! our arena is great but hasn't been cared for over the years so we have a higher percentage of sand one end of the school to the other! Also it drains so well the sand compacts down and becomes hard so the harrow would help that a little too! ~And then like you say I can use it in the fields.

Thanks!

Leveller defiantly i used to use up side down Harrows when I invested in a leveller it transformed the school .

I also harrow but depends on your surface I imagine? I found the leveller not as effective for some reason...we have a cushionride and sand mix.

Sorry for hijacking thread op, Sidney, how do you find the mix of surfaces, I am in desperate need of a top up of cushion ride but it is so expensive, especially as I have to have it delivered down the road and transported to me in smaller loads due to access. Sea sand I could prob get hold of cheaply but my cushioride has been down 5 years and is a bit thin in places although not at all deep as tons of drainage so never wet. ...... With hindsight would u mix surfaces again (I rarely school its more turn out and lunging).

Tbh we bought the property with the surface already down. However after 5 yrs of use, admittedly not heavy, it has stood up well and does not need topping up in the forseeable future.

We turn out occasionally on it, but lunge regularily on this surface and rarely marks so can't fault it.

Hope that helps.
