I was wondering if anyone had any advice on the best way to level my sand school?
We have a harrower but it's pretty useless and now doesn't attach to the tow bar on my friends 4x4. The fact I don't have anything with a tow bar also makes it difficult. I know I can rake it by hand but was wondering if I'm missing a trick? Are there things on the market to make this job less rubbish? Do people ask their farmers to do it? How do people maintain their sand schools to make this job easier?
I realise this may be a silly question but thought it was worth seeing what others did and hopefully getting some ideas 😀

We used a harrow with a flat edge one side and spikes on other side (you flip it over depending on what you want to do), we pulled it with our garden tractor. We also had a very wide rake off ebay which was useful to quickly rake over any areas. We now have a synthetic fibre surface which is maintenance free and best thing we've ever done.

Love this idea! Been wondering about buying a quad :)

Quads are great if you have the pennies, we found them just too expensive, we ended up opting for a garden tractor (they look like little mini tractors) as it had a cutting deck on it so it's great for saving time on the lawn and we actually topped the fields last year with it too!

I also have a garden tractor (they are also less desirable than quads so less likely to be pinched) I don't have a school to be leveled but my husband does use the tractor for any number of tasks such as carting muck and water, topping long grass and he also harrows the field with a sheep hurdle laid flat weighed down with a pallet (roped together) best thing is that I can send him off with a full tank of petrol, a list of jobs and a bottle of cider and not see him for hours!

A friend levels her school by raking the worst off the very edges then pulling a pallet with a 4x4

ours is one that looks like a small metal gate.

we tow it behind a VW polo or a Honda civic, just with a short metal chain, covered in hose, looped through the tow hook at the back, neither has a proper tow bar.

been doing this for years with no probs.

That's a really good idea and a cheaper option! Provided my little Peageout 107 is up to the job :) will definitely be cheaper to buy/make a more suitable harrower.
Thanks for the ideas people! I knew it was worth asking :)

you should be fine, our harrow can just about be moved by one person, and by moved i mean pulled around in to place, its WAY too heavy for me to lift up off the floor, and the polo and the honda both pull it fine.

Dont go too fast, otherwise the harrow might bounce, and you should be fine.

You might have to rake the corners by hand as obviously even the smallest car has a bigger turning circle than a quad, but it takes me about 5mins to just do the very points of the corners :)

I use a 'Keep a Level' and have done for years. It's fab and I tow it on the back of a 250 quad! Don't know any other way of doing it without a tow are sorry apart from like you said, by hand! Good luck with that!

I use a lawn tractor to pull the harrow/grader.

How unlevel is it? If it is very "out" you may need it laser levelled first with a bulldozer.
