Just seen this video on BBC:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8490635.stm

It looks like his pony slipped and he rolled off but after he appears to lob his stick in an angry manner and it flings right behind his head (towards boxes and other ponies), slightly uncalled for, no? Perhaps his goal was disallowed or he didn't score but he wasn't hurt...

Thoughts...?

actually it was cos a businessman has promised to donate 100,000 to his charity if he didnt fall off. He did, but the business guy paid up anyway, Heard it on 'this morning'.

Slight over-reaction - his horse fell over. Doesn't seem to be anyones fault, just an accident. Himself and the horse seemed fine so I don't really understand why he would be angry.

Ahh, that explains it. Good buisnessman lol he didn't really fall though, did he - the horse did.

Yes, I saw that this morning! I was totally shocked when I saw his reaction!
Its not as if it was for a championships was it? I thought it was just a fundraiser game? Even still, it was a bit "bad loser" attitude!
I thought he was very much a down to Earth person, and was never really one for having tantrums!!

I thought it was also very dangerous to be throwing a Polo stick like that... imagine if it hit a spectator or a pony!!! OUCH!!

Harry - Pull yourself together!! Its only a game!!

Exactly my thoughts!

I hardly ever post her ebut I thought you might all share in my frustration!

Ok, so a businessman said that but still no reason to lob a stick of quite a weight like that! Accidents happen.

Spur of the moment reaction I imagine, I dare say he regrets it.

Of course none of us mere mortals have ever thrown anything or had a little paddy because we felt a bit foolish (or felt we let someone down) have we?

I was more concerned about someone/thing being hit by it!

I hear where you're coming from, I dropped my toast butter side down this morning and cried because I was hungry-I got out the wrong side of bed!

my horse did something more dangerous than that at a show completely embrassed me but i didn't throw things hit her or storm off!! i just took her quietly back to the trailer, un tacked her and took her home. quietly i was completely peeved but outwardly you wouldn't have known.

its about controlling yourself in bad situations, we all have our bad days its how we handle them that counts

It was fortunate they weren't though, it was a thoughtless action, yes, and because of who he is bound to get publicised, it is a bitch of a way to have to lead a life not being able to do anything without being picked up on it.

Sorry about your toast

Ah the good old people bashing; not like this forum is b*tchy or anything....

He didn't throw stick at anyone or thing, same as a tennis player throwing the racket down if they fall over. Frustration when your adrenaline is in full flow and you could have scored a goal, had the pony not slipped, surely can be forgiven???

Of course if you actually left your computer screens maybe you too could experience the real world....

If you thought you'd lost £100,000 for charity would you just laught it off? I think not!

TBH I don't see the problem atall

Yes it probably wasn't called for and not needed and gives out a bad impression etc but these things happen

He is only human and as people have said down to earth. He cared about the game and was frustrated when it went wrong for whatever reason. He didn't hurt anyone or anything.

Oh come on. Have you never seen a footballer kick the turf because he missed a goal? Yes it was unfortunate that the stick bounced but I expect he didn't really expect it to do that and therefore potentially injure a horse/person/property. Have you never experienced a moment of sheer frustration and annoyance because something unexpected and nobody's fault - or even your own fault - happened which meant you missed your short term goal?

He was in the moment, it was adrenaline. lets not forget he was (still is?) a squaddie and served - royal or not royal, they wouldn't have let him if they didn't feel he could control and express his emotions in servicable ways.

Had he kicked his pony, different story. But he didn't. Lets not make a crime out of something where there is none.

It didnt look like he threw it anywhere near anybody. The camera has shortend everything up.A tough bit of riding there and I am glad the business man still paid up.

I'm sorry to say it happens a lot in Polo.

Ponies falling and bratish behaviour.

[/ QUOTE ]
I agree polo does have a larger amount of falls than, say, show jumping, due to the high contact nature of the game, but i wouldn't say brattish behaviour is generally a big feature. Adrenaline-based actions perhaps more frequently, but the majority of players that i've seen are sporting and conceal their disappointment a bit better.
Glad no one was hurt, and that the money was still donated.
