Oh I see!! I thought you meant at the same time :o
Yes, I think so as long as you get good enough grades in horse management (BTEC national certificate) to progress on to equine dentistry as a degree :)

Great facilitys but I wouldnt keep my horse there. No turnout its clay soil so horses may go out for about 10 days a year. Hard to get into the schools and (when i was there at least) the outdoor arenas were not lit so couldnt ride in the evening. Hay and straw was limited so you could not have ad lib hay for your horse. There are a few good yards around the area if you have a car.

This^ but apply for the dentistry early on so you get a place. i missed out this year but im enjoying my non horsey course so im not fussed! i did work experience though and its a hard bloody slog! i defo suggest you do a few days work experience with a EDT to get a taste of it! and i have been told the foundation is much better than the BA hons as you do a block release work placement so its much more hands on and practical!

Im at hartpury and loving it :) do apply early and make sure you have an excellent personal statement and plenty of work experience.

I decided not to bring my horse and im so glad i didnt :) there is very limited turnout, extremely strict rules about dress code and timings for mucking out ect. and there is lots of scrutiny about what you do with your horse, the condition its in, how you ride, what your horse looks like etc etc etc. My friend brought her horse and is regretting it now. she is up at 5.30 every morning to get to the yard for 6.00 to muck out etc and then be back for lectures at 8.30 !
There might be fantastic facilities but that doesnt mean you get to use them :)
Would you be coming as a college student or a university student because if you are part of the college you will have yard duties to do and alot of them find they dont have time for their own horse as well

hope this helps and if you want mail me about anything feel free :) and ill help as much as i can :) xxx

I have just graduated from Hartpury and kept my horse there and off site at their other yard (which has much more turnout!) I also worked on the yard, and in the yard office and was a supervisor for a barn of liveries. So I pretty much know all there is to know! PM me if you have any specific questions :-)

All I can say is if you plan to go into the industry afterwards make sure you have experience and a reference from someone noteable!!

Unfortunatly a majority of the students there have got a reputation and I know many proffesionals who would never hire someone who has graduated from there.

But it has lovely facilities runs events quite often you may be there during the olympics which would be fun but I personally wouldn't keep a horse that because of the lack of turnout and because of the type of people caring for him.

Wonderful facilities, wonderful opportunities, but one caveat: when I was visiting one evening a year or two ago, there were four people schooling in the indoor arena. Schooling on their own, not being instructed, but *all four* were using draw reins. Seemed to be standard practice. And there was an instructor around close by.

Rather a bummer from one of the leading training colleges in the country!

ditto this, I went about 15 years ago now and took my mare she was on diy and they told you when you had to do the horse 6am lunch time after lectures and then had to ride, I found following there rules very difficult along with lectures and essays. As stated I also had to do my mare in shirt tie jodphurs and tidy boots. It may have changed but if I ever went again I would not keep my horse there. I also lived on site And had a amazing time there just pity about the diy side of it. The turnout was rubish but I was lucky has my mare was not a fan of being in the feild anyway letalone when it was cold and wet.

Hey,
Not 100% on courses etc.
But in response to taking your horses my sister was there with 2 (3 at one point) of hers and she loved it. Always having lessons (though she had lessons on the other horses there they would allow her to use one of hers for another - as she had a couple a day) and competing tonnes. Not sure about turnout. But i know she loved having them, was very hard work. You have a lot of chores etc to do. But they made her a yard manager/type person so she was down there a lot and keeping an eye, so she spent most of the day with them unless she was in classes.
Go with what you think best, its a good time to brush up on our skills if you get to do a lot of riding as the facilities are great and there is a lot of things to get up too :)

Well yes facilities are great! BUT no turnout!

If you are superstar status then you can go on the academy yard!

Year One you can stay on site after that most people share a rented house together.

The cold weather is the worst! There was only one working tap for 200 odd horses this year! Also storage is a problem for DIY's so don't bring loads of stuff-feed bins/rug lockers etc. A lot of people keep their horses nearby but then you need a car etc! It is choice though!

A lot of people do drop out-sometimes reasons unknown but most find the juggling of lectures and trying to do their horse on DIY and take it for walks around due to no turnout a problem

(as above really!)

i dont mean to be rude, just merely very interested,:o..

told my old riding instructor (head of equestrian at the school) that i was looking at hartpury, and she said "i would touch it with a bardge pole!" i was slightly shocked at this as all i have heard is good..

but apparently (someones earlier thread said also) it has a bad reputation? .. just wondering what others thought as i am looking around! :) ... i was suggested moreton morrell and RAC and Linclon etc

I'm in my first year at Hartpury and loving it!!! :D

Before I came I heard so many bad things about Hartpury and about the DIY livery and stupid rules but honestly they rules aren't that bad!! They are only in place because of health and safety and they make sense!! I don't see why everyone complains about them so much.

There has also been a lot of turnout this year, more than I was prepared for(!) and its only just stopped now, however, if/whenever the weather improves they are straight out again.

Schools are ALWAYS available - I've never had trouble getting my horse exercised.

You can buy additional hay and straw so you can feed adlib too.

The only downside I've found so far is the lack of hacking. There is a route around campus but its only walk/trot but there is very little hacking available in the whole Hartpury area.

Also think its pathetic that people have these thoughts and images of "Hartpury Girls" . If they were to come and see us, most of us aren't actually that bad ;)
