I was playing with my ponio in the indoor school this evening and he only had his bridle on while I was doing some loose schooling/jumping...

We then did some follow the leader games with no bridle and I then decided that I would have a walk around on him naked! so off I toddled to get a trustworthy leadrope and my hat and jumped on! :D

He was soooo good!! :D after about 5 mins he started to get the hang of the new controls and was really good doing circles and changing the rein ect... we stayed in walk this time but hoping to get to cantering about at some point in the future! tried to take a video but was too dark :(

So proud of my little exracer and how far he has come in the last 3 years and the amazing bond we have! I am sooo lucky to have such a wonderful little horsey :D:):D

Yes, would pop on mine without tack, but only in a field or school. The cob can be ridden just by cues for direction from a swung lead rope at the shoulder to aid seat and leg cues.
Its not much use for proper schooling or riding on roads, but its a bit of fun now and again in a paddock.

Yes once decided to ride my old horse like this for some mad reason. Was going well until I asked him to canter, he then did not want to stop and did several dozen laps of the school progressively getting faster and making the circle smaller with me clinging on desperately hoping for him to stop. He did eventually after many voice aids from me and frantic pulling on his mane in the hope this would make him stop (it didn't!). Luckily there was no one around as I'm sure they would have found it extremely funny, he'd never do anything malicious, he just loves cantering!

loads... tend to put a lead rope on as a neckstrap if I'm jumping, but if not then he's totally naked. I'm very lazy with tack...

Yes, have ridden the youngster naked. Didn't end too well! But it was really the thoroughbred's fault (most things are ;)). Have ridden the TB nekkid too, for that matter. Didn't end well either. Would try it again a school, with the pair of them separated!

Yep :) I used to hop on my Sec A in the field, although last time I did it he decided to launch himself at the youngster, and then spin around broncing so erm, that may be the last time for a while now that I try - although to be fair he hasn't been sat on under any circumstances for 2yrs :o I've ridden Dante in a headcollar & then this summer I had a walk & trot on him with just the reins around his neck (detached from the bit). He was better than I expected though :)

Yep!
Ridden my elderly retired cob round the field with just a leadrope knotted around her neck.
Would love to try this with my tb in the confines of a school, can walk trot canter gallop and jump her bareback in a head collar and she follows me with no headcollar on juat like my oldie will :)

I've not done nothing but lots in just a headcollar. Far more responsive than bridle and saddle.
I would always favour bareback over a saddle, but do still like a headcollar or bitless bridle in general. Even if I tend to end up using a mane over controls if all goes tits up :D

Jftd, there is rarely a post where I am not jealous of you and your horses, whether popping jumps with nothing or painting horses with a gun in tow!

Yes, fairly often, did it almost daily racing across the field in my teens, & once went for a gallop down a bridleway that was attached to the yard I was on, in the very early morning. It just added to the thrill knowing I had no obvious way of stopping. Stupid I know, but I was a teen & in my defence was highly unlikely to make it to a road. Still do it now, however only in the field or other enclosed spaces. And loads of riding in a headcollar & leadrope.

Yes, all the time. At my old yard we did the clear round jumping with bridle but she is 22 and has too much in the way of withers for jumping properly without a saddle. I could do a prelim or maybe a novice without tack - she changes direction, gaits, speeds, backs up, turns on forehand and haunches and other tricks like pushing a ball, standing on pedestal, that sort of thing.

My daughter sometimes rides and jumps our pony in the field with no tack at all - not even a neck strap, lead rope or head collar. Will have to try and find the video for you.

Thank you to everyone who has replied... the pics look great and I look forward to watching that video! :)

My boy still needs to build up alot more topline before we start doing anything faster just yet!

Yep, I've done this with my boy quite a few times - figure of eight canters and everything by just responding to neck pressure! :D We finished by opening the gate of the school like this and going for a walk around the yard car park completely tackless, even managing to stop and have a chat with some friends! He was such a star bless him! :D

I remember riding my 17hh mare down from the field with just a head collar at canter...that was only 2yrs ago but no chance of that with the 14.2hh...not for a while yet I need the sticky bum jods glued to a saddle in trot let alone canter!

Yes i have, she did have a headcollar on as i wasn't sure how it'd go with just rope round neck so i wanted some security there just incase, but i didn't need to use it :D it went well, walk, trot and canter on 20m circle, change of rein in trot and walk trot canter on other rein with just rope round neck, i didnt topuch the leadropes attatched to headcollar! i will be trying it again and hopefully progress to just rope round neck without added security of heacollar with leadropes there :D
i can jump her up to 3ft6 with just headcollar on though so i hope i can try it with just rope round neck too :D

I've done it in only a headcollar and leadrope with my boy around the field, mainly because I wanted to develop leg aids and I found I was relying on my hands and the bridle too much

Now we do it quite often going back and forth to the stables. Mainly when I'm choosing to be incredibly lazy :p

We might try a canter like that this year.... but first I have to sort out his bucking at jumping shows. Excitable little so and so he is!

She can be ridden in just a halter - but thats it. I did hop on once in the school with nothing on and she refused to move away from the gate. I do envy those with less stubborn horses!

Can't help but think that girls videos are stupid more than anything! Such a viral video has made a lot of people including children copy. No hat, jumping very large fences and without tack isnt setting a good example. She could be held quite responsible..

I've sat on my horses without tack and ridden bareback on the odd occasion but don't see the point when my tack is nice and comfortable!

When I was a teenager, I used to jump on my little TB at one end of the field and gallop him up to the gate. He was saddle and bridleless - I just grabbed a lump of mane and went for it....at that age I kinda knew he was gonna stop at the gate...he always did :-)
I should add that I didn't wear a hat - but you didn't in those days unless you were going to PC or hunting. Hey ho - those were the days - complete madness I know!!
