hi,

my 8yo TB got a rather large abscess 3 months ago hes been clear of it for about 10 weeks now. but as on a week ago he went lame on the lunge on hos right hind where the abscess was.

ever since then hes been pretty much sound ridden and on lunge but every now and then he will go lame in right hind and then come right again after a few strides this ussually happens about twice on a hours ride somtimes doesnt happen at all mostly on the softer ground it happens.

i have poulticed his foot and hot tubbing it but he seems better and hardly lgoing lame at all now but hes still not right. i know abscess can take a while to come out but iv been reading about stifle probs and problems in fetlocks...

just looking for some calming advice and some kind works is it just an abscess or is it just a conicidence its the same leg!?

PS i have spoken to both vet and farrier and both think it could be another abscess and to give him till next friday and if still the same give them another call...

hes got a new saddle that fits aswell this was done about 3 weeks ago other than that there hasnt been any changes

PS he doesnt feel or look like hes in pain his ears are always pricked

thanks!!

Personally i would have the vet out i wouldnt be happy to wait another week without knowing what the problem actually is

thanks for the replies, i had vet out to the abscess last time so i trust he thinks after y description he thinks its an abscess, and hes doing same things as wehn it happend last time.

he was sound today so im going to give him over the weekend in his stable as not allowed in feilds anyways un ridden and poulticed and hot tubbed and it not better n monday i was going to get vet out anyways.

last time the abscess took 6 weeks to show its face and burst.

thanks

Are there any sore spots on his sole from the abscess that could cause him to 'flinch' when they are pressed upon?

Agree with others, I would get farrier out to check him over and then vet depending on farrier's findings.

farrier can come out monday so i will call him over the weekend i have pressed his soled and he seems ok, the absecc doesnt have a hole on the sole it came out the coronet band x

My boy had a big abscess in the summer which took a long time to drain. He was still footy on and off for weeks afterwards and when re-xrayed (he was x-rayed originally to make sure it really was an abscess as it was taking so long to appear) it showed altered foot balance. The vet and farrier thought that it had been so painful that he'd changed the way he put his foot down and had been walking on the side of his hoof, altering the balance. He had a couple of corrective trims and is now fine. Maybe an x-ray is in order?

If only taking the ocassional lame stride i wud still hack and not leave in the box as movement will help the abscess to erupt sooner which is what you want at the end of the day

Dont panic, if he has had an abscess before it will be very likely that he has another brewing, the weather is just perfect of the bleddy things. Don't be persuaded to give antibiotics for an abscess as they keep it at bay and you want it to burst out.

thanks for all the replys i really appreciate them es still not worried especially after last time but he said if i insist he will xray... im going to leave it another few days and keep doimg what im doing see if it helps. thanks x

I was a happy owner til I joined this forum - Since then I've self diagnosed my horse and she currently has Ulcers, Kissing spines, arthritis in the hock (Which she does actually have ), abcesses, ring worm, wood worm, tape worm, a plait in her mane, sarcoids, splints, spavins, mud fever, cushings, crushed heels, the list goes on.......... I very rarely venture into Veterinary ! This forum is bad for your horses health :D:D:D:D:D

On a serious note though, she had an abcess 10 ten weeks ago which resulted in the vet as she had to be sedated to cut it out. There were two points, one on the toe and one on the heel with a track than ran between the two. I had to have the vet twice in two days (normally go straight to farrier for foot problems but he obviously can't sedate) He spoke to vet and came out twice more over the next couple of weeks to check etc. I kept her her in for 8 weeks altogether just to keep it dry and a chance to heal.

just thought i would update as it has been nearly a month since this all happend. vet assured me he didnt need to come out and to see how he went i followed his advice got farrier out he suggest abscess but couldnt see anything and to see how he went over next 2-4 days.

called vert bacj he agreed with farrier and maybe suggested putting him on codlive joint suppliment which i did straight away although few days before this he was showing less and less signs of being interminatly lame. i also had a full lesson on his and a 3 hour hack and he was completly fine. however i still did it anyways as my vet is great.

since putting him on it 4 weeks ago hes been amazing had absolutly no signs of stiffness or lamness and to be fair hes felt great :)

vet said its proberly just mild arthritus and he will check him when he comes out for jabs next month :)
