My EP is from the KC LaPierre school and uses the same sort of thing; they call it "Perfect Hoofwear". I'm sure someone will be along to tell me it's the same thing at twice the price lol!
My horse had it for a few months when she lost a significant part of the back of her hoof. She wasn't transitioning at the time, she had been barefoot 5 years, but it was useful to protect the damaged area and allow it to grow out. She could be ridden in the school and hacking through the country. The wraps wouldn't have stood up to hacking on roads though.
I have another horse who may need to go barefoot shortly, either short or long term, and I will definitely use the method for her, as she has lost a lot of hoof recently, and it will help with transition while accelerating the growth process.
My farrier used it ( equicast ) on my tb. He'd had a hoof wall resection, and then pulled more hoof wall off himself, so had nothing to nail a shoe onto.
My farrier used the equicast and then shod him.
We had to take it off several times due to tb having lots of abscess when he was wearing it, but I don't know if the casts caused them or not. I tend to think that my tb had the abscess brewing before the cast went on. Either way it wouldn't stop me using it again.
