Has anyone any experience of having hooves in cast for laminitis?

Hi all,

Has anyone experienced this? My mare has got the imprint shoes on at the mo but not too happy with them....wondered if this would be worth a try. The pedal bone was just about to protrude her sole 2 weeks ago so things are pretty bad!

Thanks for any advice.

Hi, i had the exact same problem with my ex lammi a few years back - my farrier really recommends these imprints - however i found barefoot worked wonders for mine when he had it. He was on Farriers Formula and had his feet reshaped every 3-4 weeks as he had rapid foot growth on the formula, but each horse is different. I would really recommend nothing.

Hey millie,
I remember posting on your thread. I am glad to hear your mare is still with us.

Out of interest, once the hoof had cracked, how did they stop the pedal bone completely coming through? It's just Robert Eustace told us that her only chance was this surgery at 10-20% chance of working and a chance she wouldn't get through the op. She had cracking in one foot, with the shoes on; the foot opened up even more the next day and she was put down that day as it really was a case of hours before the bone came through.

misread the post - sorry i didnt see the part about pedal bone coming through. In which case i would speak to your vet and farrier and they will advise you on the best course of action.

The vet has said to use the imprint shoes and on the hoof with the sever drop of pedal bone, the farrier built up her heel to relieve the pull on the tendon to try and stop the bone dropping any further.
She had this done nearly 2 weeks ago now but is still quite sore on her feet.
The reason I ask about the casts is that I got talking to someone whos horse was in exactly the same predicament and went down with lami at the same time as my mare. Her farrier suggested the feet be put in cast so the pedal bone absolutley couldn't move any more and gave massive support to the feet. Her vet (which also happens to be my vet!) advised her against this as it can cause thrush but decided to go with the farriers suggestion. She was in cast for 8 weeks and she said as soon as the casts went on she saw a MASSIVE improvement in mobility and an x ray that she had after the casts were removed showed that the pedal bone was actually in a better position and almost back to a managable position.
I just feel as though time is running out for my mare and would like to try anything possible to try and get her right.

2 weeks is not along time in laminiitis. i would be tempted to leave it a little longer before you right them off!

With a cast on mobility wil be greatly improve duce to the fact you are immobiliseing the foot.

If it was me, i would give the glue on a little longer to work there magic.
