has anyone been home checked by a charity for rehoming a horse?

Hi,
just wondering what they are going to be looking for, what questions they asked etc also has anyone failed a homecheck and why? or has anyone passed and now has a horse and has it worked out ok?

all advice gratefully received :)
 
I had a check years ago - all very very easy and very basic. To be honest the person doing the checking knew very little about horses. And kept going on about worming but had no idea about worm counts etc. When the rescues arrived it was absolutely riddled with worms, the feet were bad so to be honest their standards in the rescue society were very low.

Show them your stables, safe fields, water and shelter and make sure you mention equine dentist, decent farrier , good vet and stress your particular nature with regards to worming and worm control.
 
Fencing safety and type, shelter/stabling, dangerous plants/items, water supply, other horses for company (No horse to be kept on its own), are some of the things that I have to check for, it is basic common horse sense and safety really.
 
I have been home checked.
They wanted to see all places where the pony would be to make sure all fencing was safe/secure. Also the shelter was checked for any dangerous things like sticky-out nails. Worming & farriery were covered in the loan agreement but we talked about it when being home-checked.
I passed the home check, and still have the pony. It's great having one on loan from a sanctuary - if I need help or advice I can ask them. And if the worst happens and I can no longer keep the pony they will have him back and he won't face an uncertain future in the sales.
 
I've been homechecked by the Blue Cross - very nice people, checked the fields were safe and secure. Stables / field shelter available & suitable.

Spoke to all who would be handling / caring for the horse.

Had a little 2yr old pony from them as a companion whilst my horse was still a baby. She was super and when the time came for her to be broken in they came an collected her to take her back to their centre. Were really considerate when picking her up and let me have a cuddle with her on my own in the trailer.

I then had, and still have an RSPCA rescue to take her place. Because I'd already had a blue cross pony the RSPCA didn't feel the need to carry out another home check.

RSPCA pony has been with me for 7 years now, only been checked on once by RSPCA after the first 6 months. I'll leave you to make your own assessment of that!
 
We were home checked by WHW.

Bloke came out, had a look at our stables and fields. We had been told that they can ask you to take the rugs off the horses etc to have a look at their weight but he didn't really pay any attention to the horses. He nattered alot to my OH about horsey business, and left!

We then got my gorgeous foalie who is now my gorgeous yearling!

We've been checked up on once, they come every 3 months apparently (but you wouldnt necessarily know that they've been as they turn up unannounced). We were there for our first one - he had a very brief look at Puz, nattered about some horsey stuff, and left!

I got the impression that if they're not 100% sure that you're a good home, they turn up ALOT and do really intense checks. But if you're a good home, they're less interested in you.

Would 10000000% recommend WHW for everything. xx
 
I have been home checked by Bransby - as others have said they like to see there is good fencing - not barbed wire! - shelter, water etc etc:)

Bransby now supply a folder for their loan horse/ponies which cover the basic information/care needs - they essentially want them properly cared for with regular farrier visits etc etc I have had my horse for 10 years now and I moved yards in that time - both yards were checked and passed. They do ongoing home checks about 3 times a year - just turn up and have a look at them. the first time I was terrified they would find something wrong and take her away!!:eek: I left a huge list of all things I had done and when they were done:) - they of course think I'm nuts and that i spoil my cob!! :eek:;):D

Anyway as i say they have only ever been pleased with what they have seen and are always at the end of the phone if I ever need to ask anything or need to tell them anything about her. They used to come and visit in lambing time and would spend more time cuddling the lambs than looking at the horse!!:rolleyes::rolleyes::D
 
Had one done back in may, they came out checked field walked around all of them, looked at shelter and stable area (however they knew the stables were not going to be used for the pony i was getting from them). Also looked at water etc.

Didnt really look at other horses i had other horses came to look at person in their field! Did say one was overweight however next time they were out and saw her without a rug on they realised shes not overweight at all just has a typical highland next. Then they did a home check last month and plan to do one again in 6 months time. They already know my farrier, vet and back people so not hard to keep track of pony.
 
Had home check done by WHW, as said above they check safety of fencing etc and just generally chat about your horse knowledge. I have had 2 ponies from them and they are great to deal with, as fh I rarely saw the inspector on his 3 monthly visits, but if about he would stop for a coffee and a natter. They are very helpful and supportive, when my old girl was coming to the end of her days he even offered to come and be with her for me whilst the deed was done.
 
well that all sounds sensible, thanks for your help guys. I keep my neds at home and have plenty of grazing and a large safe barn for shelter my only concern is that I have stock fencing its pig wire with a top strand of barbed wire but is backed up with stone walls. Unfortunatly a necessary evil as my old cob walks through post and rail and electric fencing! and we have sheep, the neighbouring fields have cattle in too. But its as safe as barbed wire can be and well maintained but il have to see what they make of it, it was mentioned on my application. Il let you know how I get on eeeek!
 
thanks to all for your advice I finally had my homecheck today and ............................................................passed:D:D:D:D:D
so hopefully get my new pony over here soon, hes a 2 year old coloured cob type gelding, will post pics when he arrives :D:D:D:D:D
