Hi everyone.
I had some tradgic news the other week my horse had fallen in his stable and had broken both hind legs. I had the vet out and did what had to be done. It was a really horrible incident so I'm not going to go into details too much .
I'm now in that scary world where I have decided i will buy a new horse after I've finished paying vet bills. I had my last horse 16 years so it's scary to me to go out and find my perfect horse. Any way getting down to it. I love Irish drafts and the chunkier ID x I have in my mind what I want and tempted for a trip to Ireland to see if it's cheaper. Has anyone done this? Did it work out cheaper or not worth it? Any experience good or bad please. I'm still paying for my stable and field so would like to fill it so it's not wasted money obviously doesn't give me amazing money to spend on a horse

I'm sorry to hear about your horse, that sounds horrific. As for buying from here, it really depends on what you're looking for. As in four year-olds will be cheaper, but these will be very green, naturally, basically horses who are just broken with a little bit done. If you're happy to go with one of these then that's going to be cheaper than a five yr-old, nicely schooled animal, with a nice amount done.

Pure draughts are in short supply here at the moment, it's more draught crosses you will find in abundance. It's a breed that takes time to mature so a five yr-old draught x will look quite light but bear in mind it will really fill out over the next two years into the chunkier type you're after. So is it for RC activities?

Hi thank you for getting back to me green is fine I'd prefer something with less milage. Yes i don't really jump much never been a fan of it. So I would mostly want something for showing, dressage schooling and hacking. All local low level competitions. I'm shocked pure draughts are low . Do you know of any dealers with good reputations?

If you're looking for a draught type for dressage and showing, I think you might be best off going for a cross as that little bit of TB blood can make a great difference to movement. You say that showing and dressage are on the cards so you'll want a good mover. I know of excellent breeders/producers here. I will PM you.

I know quite a few very reputable draught breeders in West Cork, always an area with an Irish Draught tradition. - in fact I think the 'West Cork Horse Breeders' are holding a sale on Apr 16th.
Sometimes the pure draughts dont look quite 'flashy' enough for pure dressage, I would suggest an IDxTB back to TB. The breeding of the traditional Irish Hunter.
Or you could contact TIHA (Trad Irish Horse Assc) based at Scarteen, Co Tipp
Both these groups have FB pages.

Yes please everyone pm me details, I want to start looking now so I have a figure in my head to aim for and where to go once I'm there. Thank you
Yes I like the ID X TB I've met some nice ones and also some mentally insane ones. Some ID x Connie look appealing but I don't know of any

Where are you? if you are happy with green, then Irish Horse Imports bring over some 20 plus horses at a time, 4 or 5, just backed or unbroken. Turnover is quick, facilities are basic and the dealer is very straight and will tell it as it is. They have a good reputation and my previous YO has had some 20 horses off him over the past 4 years. IHI is in Pangbourne and prices were roughly between £3-6K
