After a couple of hideous winters of having my horses out 24/7 I am now seriously looking into building my own stables. My problem is that I am on rented land. However, I have a good relationship with the farmer and he is fine with me putting up stables at my own expense, but herein lies my dilemma. I don't really want to go to the expense of erecting said stables for someone who is by far wealthier than me to benefit long term. I would like to be able to move them/sell them when the time comes for me to move the horses (which is the plan within the next couple of years).

Has anyone have any experience of pre-fabricated stables? What sort of price would I be looking at, from clearing space on land, putting down foundations to erecting the stables?

I would not be planning on having horses in every night, more on the days when weather is awful and I want to save my fields a bit, or if need box rest.

I am looking into this myself. You would have to have planning permission for permanent stables which will cost you. I have a mobile shelter on metal skids for the ponies but need a stable for my horse. I am going for mobile again (no planning needed around here). I have just priced a 12 x 12 stable on metal skids with onduline apex roof and shiplap cladding at £2050 delivered and erected. This is a top quality stable you can do it cheaper but you get what you pay for. Most timber stables are built I sections so you can take them down and move them.
 
I think if you are intending to re locate, then it is a good idea to make sure they are bolted together rather than another method, also grease the bolts as they are installed, agree with making sure they are good quality.
I think cost of providing a hard standing will depend on accessibility and if farmer is able to shift the big bags for you and remove topsoil.
 
A friend has portable stables but they are metal framed with tarpaulins to form the sides and roof. The tarp is the same as they use on the side of lorries and it has metal rings to put rope through to attach it to the frame. They are truly portable, attach together and come down a bit like scaffolding and are very hard wearing. The floor is earth with a deep litter straw bed so very warm and cosy.

I am thinking I will need to build four stables and yes, I definitely want them to be portable and can't have anything that needs planning permission as is not my land and don't think farmer would go for it, although he has said he will help with the construction and clearing space for them.

Lindylouanne, that sounds interesting but I don't think I have the skills to build myself and think it would be more a case of buying prefabricated and then just erecting on site.
