Has anyone bought from an auction

We have bought shetlands at both Aberdeen and Lerwick - which is a few days before Aberdeen and it's only £8 transport from Shetland to Aberdeen docks I think? It depends what you are after as to how much they cost.

Colts - weanling to 3yo are generally meat Money unless they are a stupid colour or come from certain studs.

Fillies go for more.

Mares not as much as you would think nor licenced stallions - again depending on colour and prefix.

There are plenty of scruffy mites at the sales that you will pity and buy for less £60 and the meat man won't bid against you. They are generally quite good when they know it's a home the pony is going to as there will always be another to fill.its spot.

I don't think we have spent more than 120gns at the sales and that was to gp to America. The rest have been meat money pity buys. One of which went to America and is truly stunning! He started off. As a cream dun miniature thing that squeaked and he is now a beautiful snow white stallion with the most gorgeous little head!

The last one we bought cost less than £50 including the boat to Aberdeen 3 years ago. He was a skewbald colt foal, standard size. He has rarely been beaten in the show ring this year and will be broken to ride over the winter ready for the HOYS qualifiers next year.

One thing with the shetlands - make sure the microchip matches the passport!!! A pen of black colts have been known to have been mixed up when the number stickers were applied!

Also take your own head collar and lead rope. They don't get sold with anything on just ushered into the ring. Most will have had very little to no handling except for being pinned down to be mocrochipped.

Thanks EWK. There are three mares I am interested in (all from the same breeder). Could I PM you their details and you could let me know what you think? There are a couple of videos with two of them.

I am thinking about buying unseen and just taking a gamble. There are a couple of horse transporters that could bring anything down that I buy.

Ive bought from both Aberdeen and unseen from Lerwick - Im not sure its something I would do without a good deal of background knowledge about the lines of the pony in question and the breeder they are coming from. Id advise watching the shows the day before if you can.

Is it a mare you are after? To be honest, there are some rare gems but it really depends what you are looking for.

Thanks for your words of advice, and I have replied to your PM.

Ditto my earlier post. If anyone is going to the Lerwick sale and has room to bring a 'pity buy' tiny down to Manchester for me, can you let me know?
