Just wondered as NFU who i'm insured with won't cover it as they say it's a routine procedure,i beg to differ and so do all my colleages who are vets.My mare has recently developed large golf ball size lumps on her belly had got increasingly itchy and has also started headshaking violently to the point of being unrideable really, she constantly rubs her nose on her front legs and is beside herself.I'm at a loss as what to do,the testing isn't cheap but the vet says it's neccasary in order to diagnose,i agree but NFU don't,very frustrated!!! what shall i do now?????

very odd, they had to ring me back so they could talk to their under writers first, thats when they said they wouldn't pay out,i'm not best happy as my one of my jobs at the vets is to deal with ins claims etc and i see people all the time claiming for it.I'm going to ring them again tomorrow and see what i can get out of them.

Thats really odd, they never queried a thing throughout the entire duration of the headshaking investigation, which started in Feb and ended in Aug, included initial investigations at the yard, further investigation at my vets, trigeminal nerve blocks, a trip to Liphook, head, neck and back x rays, scoping and allergy testing.

I think that was nearly £4k in total, at no point did anybody call us or question anything, they were extremely fast at paying out and the only thing i had to pay part of was they overnight stay at Liphook which i knew as they don't pay hospital livery.

Thinking about it though, the only thing they did say was if the headshaking was found to be behavioral(sp) then none of the treatment would be covered!!
As it is i know my horse very well and despite what people said i was 100% sure there was a problem and it wasn't just Lia being a stroppy ginger mare!
And i was right, she has a deformity in her left ethmoid, and allergies to cats dogs humans and grain/cereal!!

Any investigative procedure to diagnose a condition should be covered under your policy. Check your vets fees wording!

NFU paid for my horse to have allergy tests done last year. They then ASKED me if I wanted to buy a Boett for her, and offered to pay for it.

They agreed to it after my vet wrote them a report telling them how itchy the horse was, and how hard I had tried to control it.
